“He asks that the way is long.

That many are the summer mornings

in which you come – with what pleasure and happiness! –

to ports never seen before.”

(C. Kavafis: Ítaca)

The longing for knowing the great Rome surely took the Galician Ramon Vázquez Molezún (1922-93) to the eternal city after the obtaining of a scholarship of posgrado for the Academy. But, listening to Kavafis’s advices in Ítaca, he did not hurry his trip but it expanded his stay between 1949 and 1954, eager to discover what at the time the Spain of autarchy and postwar period was denying to him. What could be an interest, initially, turned into an authentic passion; and perhaps, later, in the whole way of living.

I would dare to say that the house that was made construct in Beluso’s beach in Bueu known as “La Roiba” (1969), is the habitat adapted for a traveler. Her laugh at Pontevedra in the one that had grown up of child it was going to mean the return to the home after a long, long trip, of almost fifty years of life nothing less, accompanied now already of his own family. All that passed time had served him to understand that the life is a mere traffic, for the one that you upset it needs baggage. And it knew it in deed, so there crossed half An Europe on board of his dear Lambretta, a motorcycle that was in the habit of coming out in photographs, which faithful companion of adventures, close to the buildings (modern and ancient) that he was visiting.

“La Roiba” got up on a few walls of containment of a former factory of salting that they were remaining in the place chosen by the architect. Those remains were accepted like own, using as firm anchor to the house that was going to rest above. One suddenly resembles Ridolfi adopting a similar attitude in his “villino Alatri”, that just finish of was ending in the Rome newly discovered by Vázquez Molezún at his arrival. Only that here, in his natal landscape, the architect  wanted to affirm the natural local values, being left to impregnate for the surge, for the wind squalls of the ocean, for the light that filters between the fugitive clouds of the Galician coast. Though often one alludes to the metaphor of the aground ship, nothing is here of “architecture for the architecture”, but everything opposite: it is the antithesis of the magnificent Nautical Club of San Sebastian (1928), of Aizpurúa and Labayen.

More than a house, it is a refuge, a promise to live rubbing the nautical experience. The scanty baggage of the traveler does not demand space for big possessions in his interior, only the indispensable thing. A succinct terrace to feel this intimate contact with the place, a few glasses at a height of the sight to enjoy the panorama while it relies sat on his exiguous lounge, some berths where to happen the night. Below, a space of store for his boats, confined by the very old walls that never managed to prevent the entry of the sea when this one was calling to the door. Only the white color and the sloping gesture of his roof, the only diagonal of his profile, reveals his predisposition to be raised in a house, raising his volume it is done by the candles of the small crafts; though, actually, this high space of the house is the real bridge of control, the redoubt of the captain Molezún. This man that one day traveler wanted to do to him without knowing that, in the bottom, he would end up by being a sailor.
