The Santa Cruz castle is a defensive structure of “modest” character that, nevertheless, registers as a singular element in the extraordinary context of forts, watchtowers and “fachos” or you camphorate that were raised in the XVIIth and XVIIIth century along the márgenes of the river Miño. At present it stands out not for his constructive or military relevancy, but for his special location, since he constructs the final link of the whole defensive frontier chain that separates Galicia of Portugal.
From the point of view fisiograph, one agrees the castle on a small rocky elevation to 73m of altitude on the level of the sea (base of the Bastion of the Cross) of the coastal platform of To Guard. The area of the defensive crown that surrounds the castle develops approximately between the levels 50 and 73 with regard to the level of the sea. Of this form, the whole set acquires a position of special topographic relevancy in relation to the urban area of the seaworthy villa, in clear dialog with the mount of Holy Key. The traces of the urban development development of will take Guard To that, in a few years, this area acquires, besides his topographic relevancy, a position of centralidad in the set of the urban zone of the villa.
The center of interpretation is located inside the cross-border strength of A Guarda.
Depending on this topographic relevancy and position and in view of the patrimonial and environmental values detected in the set, is decided the location of the Center of Interpretation of the Cross-border Strengths of the Baixo Miño in the area of the Castle of Santa Cruz. His singular condition of final link in the defensive chain and the high tourist claim constituted by the villa of To Guard they are decisive elements.
The interpretation Center.
The Baixo Miño cross-border strengths interpretation Center has been articulated in two parts related between yes:
1º- An already existing construction in the set solved by means of a massive and massive factory that it will use as space of diffusion and exhibitions.
This building will serve equally as witness of the recent residential past of the set.
2º- Three small pavilions of new plant that, in agreement with the military past of the strength and the own disposition of the military pavilions, appear as light but resistant elements, of “dry” construction.
The structure and the exterior panelado of steel will contribute the finished fundamental one.
These small pavilions will use as previous space of receipt, bar – terrace and bathroom.
Between the preexisting construction and the small pavilions a great threshold or covered zone is stretched. Here there is aptitude to receive groups and to provide the necessary space of relation and reception, with shade in summer and protection opposite to the meteorological inclemencies in the epoch invernal.recepción, bar – terrace and bathroom.
“When a project of architecture begins his construction it is when everything starts receiving sense. For it the materials are a that cannot be waived part of the trade of an architect. The materials are skin, sound, temperature and presence.
The materials also define the “local architecture” and in such a powerful environment… the materials have to be neutral, round and sincere.”
An appointment of our speech in the withdrawal of prize Archizinc. París. 2016
The intervention in the existing building respects the exterior leaf of granite, his thermal inertia and a trasdosado autoamble of tabiquería drought obtains a better adjustment to the way.
The new pavilions it is constituted in his surrounding vertical one by a light solution solved as drafty front and that for his characteristics, claimed modulation and need of maintenance has designed and constructed itself almost in a handcrafted way. His exterior leaf – his “skin” – is of stainless steel.
Both buildings solve his cover in zinc with lifted meeting.
None of the buildings has been foreseen for the persons’ habitual and continuous permanency, specially in the winter period. In any case, the principal building might give response to a more demanding use.
