Lérez Cultural Center | Jorge Rodríguez+José María Soto

The Lérez Cultural Centre is an equipment comunitario edificado on the plot in which it situated  the ancient teleclub, of the cual conserves  his main façade. His ending supposes the culmination of a long process characterised by the strong implication vecinal, that sued the return of this inmueble, enajenado during the Franco regime, from does decades, for his utilisation like centre comunitario. The project resulted winner of a contest to the that presented  more than fifty proposals and that it was summoned by the School of Architects, the City council of Pontevedra and the Association of Communities of Mountains in Man Common gives Parish of Lérez, owners of the building.

With all certainty, this work could have been built by the double of what finally cost without that this had meant a greater architectural quality. After the failure of contest and during the preparation of the constructive projects, the budget reduced  in more than 30% with regard to the established in the bases of the same. This, joined to the delicate economic stage did necessary the devise flexible and economic solutions that did not put in danger the correct ending of the work, whose final budget of settlement contained  inside the established in the offer of bidding, that, because of the drops offered, went even inferior to the established in the project of execution.

THE CONTEXT. OVERLAPPED REFERENTS

The experience of the city known is marked by the presence of subjective referents that little by little go sheltering in our memory associated to some determinate recuerdos or circumstances that confers them this singular character. Analogously to the way in that a song or a perfume can move us to a period of our life or wake up the remember of a person through a mental association established previously, the urban referent is the element that helps to the identification of a part of the city like something known and familiar. It is not necessarily an excellent element neither a piece stood out, besides is entirely subjective, different for each person according to his personal experience, can have a distinct degree of influence, from an only person until a whole community. Some of these referents are ephemeral and last only a short space of time, like the bakery, the warehouse of toys or even the house of a fellow that we can identify in the repetitive homogeneity of the current city. Others trascend in the time and are independent of people or activities, in this case is used to to be the physical component, a singular image the one who differentiates this element of the rest.

In the context object of this study exist several referents caracterizadoras. It is an urban field of transition that does of link between Pontevedra and the main aldeas that configure the parish of Saint Benito. During generations, the ephemeral referents have  sucedido, however there are two elements that have kept the essence of this urban landscape during the last fifty years, and that do it recognizable still in spite of the changes that have affected to the rest of surroundings.

One of these elements is the building of the pharmacy, in the crossing of the road of Santiago (Juan Bautista Andrade) and the road of Lérez-Berducido (street Leandro of the River), his intermediate position between both streets and his characteristic silhouette turn it into a milestone that orients to the eventual visitor and even to the usual. The another referent is the own building of the “Teleclub” whose façade ecléctica, that remains unalterable along the years, marks the entrance in the parish of Lérez, where the city dissolves his urban fabric in some still rural surroundings.

The conservation of this type of referents is necessary, his value is often independent of the quality or sophistication of his architecture, but the paper that exert can not be substituted easily. However, in occasions the sentimental value arrives for salvaguardar a building whose architecture is not sufficiently notable. When the modification of the Plan poses the conservation only of the frontón of the original building, produces  a contradiction between the wish to conserve a remember of the old teleclub and the suspicion that the building is not really apt for the current world. The frontón has to remain in façade but no necessarily in the same disposal, says , which can result in the same effect of loss of identity that if the building disappeared entirely.

PROPOSAL OF ARCHITECTURAL INTEGRATION

The bases of the contest pose the need, established by a modification of the plan urbanístico, to keep the frontón of the ancient building, being able to relocate in any position in the envolvente of the new building. What proposes  in this project is the conservation of the all existent façade in his original position and keeping all his elements, originating the new building from the dialogue with the same. The ancient image conserves  but is tamizada subtly by a permeable veil that will unify a new envolvente, with a current language and creating the one who will be new urban referent for the 21st century. It respects  his original function like threshold of access and the previous terrace  reinterpreta in shape of external hall; to the interior respects  his character, opening and dilating the immediate space, adapting the configuration of the new levels to his presence.

SPACE And FUNCTIONALITY

The distribution programática looks for to answer to the exigencias of the contest, prioritising the functionality of the answer, the versatilidad of the distinct fields and especially the space and environmental quality in all the building. In this way, they enter  some variations with regard to the bases with the intention to optimise the volume built and the general operation. The functional organisation bases  in the optimisation of the effective area of natural illumination in the zones of work. If the distance of a space where realise  any visual task exceeds six metres, the use of artificial light results indispensable the greater part of the time. Thus the configuration of the building realises  maximizando the surface in façade and opening a wide central atrium that will contribute elder luminosidad, space quality and will favour the natural ventilation. The room of multiple uses has  in the inferior plant to simplify the circulations of the building and allow a more independent operation and better isolated with regard to the other zones. It ensures  the introduction of light and natural ventilation through lucernarios and openings.

The operation of each space is thought from a logic of adaptability to the needs of each moment of the life of the building. It bets  by spaces diáfanos, opened with possibility of different configurations by half the combination of the fixed elements with mobile septums. From the café, until the distinct classrooms and offices are thought like open spaces and integrated in the group that in a moment die can  independizar of the rest of the building. In this way it favours  the interaction between the distinct fields, favouring the casual meeting and converting each space in a zone where converse and relate.
