Abstract

Italy, 1972: Mina Mazzini and Alberto Lupo sing the song "Parole, Parole" as a duet, a lament about the lies she has had to hear from him. A melodic way of expressing Caius Titus' "Verba volant, scripta manent" or our popular Spanish phrase "Las palabras se se las lleva el viento".

Today we still turn to words to express the unknowns, the uncertainties, our questions and our answers. Crisis, emigration, poverty, climate change... all find their echo in words such as recycling, solidarity, fair distribution or sustainability. But are they more than empty words?
