An eaves and a man | Jose Ramon Hernández Correa

I have projected many houses for clients whom the architecture they had never been interested, and that did not have any formation not no special criterion brings over of her, they nor had raised any question on her up to this moment to his own house be done ever; a house that, suddenly, was waking the need up of “being special” and of “saying something”.

In all of them they were giving themselves two circumstances that seem to me to be opposite. For more times that he has been a witness of the phenomenon still me full of perplexity.

The first one is her of differing from the others. It was his house, his life, his identity and his personality. The house had to be only.

The second one is her of the same cliches have that the whole world. None was admitting anything either remotely new or different what already they knew.

The solution to this dichotomy is impossible. It is “to do what all but to be different from all”. And to the only thing that takes such an exposition it is to doing what all but more: bigger, more times, more involved.

It is very common (even between very educated people) to look for the excellence for accumulation. Do not say that one to them of ” less it is more “. Less it is a shame, a disaster, a shame. Nobody does a house to himself in order that the neighbors feel sorry him. One does it in order that they envy him, or, at least, in order that they have him in consideration.

Sometimes I have thought about this with anger and with impotence, but I believe that it is a worthy question of reflection. Normally the architects we feel superior to our client, do his house to them almost peevishly and do not try to penetrate in the question.

I have tried to understand it, but I confess that I do not obtain it. What yes I have clear is that it is not even a despicable phenomenon not our clients are stupid, not not similarly at all.

The exclusive and exquisite plastic formation that is given to the architects in the school does not serve not before these clients who want to do his own house to him not before the promoter – type who tries to do several to sell. A shame is that we throw for the hut our formation and do bad houses. The marvellous thing would be to understand our client (not to convince him, not ” to educate him “: to understand him), and to be capable of doing architecture not only despite everything it, but with all that and thanks to all that.

Like example I show you the eaves of a house that I did. I neither designed it I nor like it. In the project gathering (already done to the taste of the client) it is completely smooth. But, already in work, the owner designed with great work and application this adornment and it was explained to the bricklayers. And it remained so proud of him that when it taught his house finished to his relatives and friends was emphisizing indicating to them more these eaves that in everything else. It had discovered the indescribable pleasure of designing and of making real the design.

But it happened slightly unexpectedly: they all liked His eaves so much that it was afraid that it was copied, and asked me if I knew how it was possible to patent. Satisfied because finally I needed for something, but I complete ignoramus of the matter, I investigated and spoke to him about the Record of the Intellectual Property, but I him warned that these eaves were not a new work. He said to me that, really, neither the constructive system nor the criterion were his, but this exact design, precisely this.

Certainly it is not some kind of patentable not registrable. He itself was conscious that he itself had done the typical eaves of the whole life, but at the same time an eaves had never made before seen: His.

Still I turn him to the matter. I I am I. Before there have never been exactly equal anybody to me. And, nevertheless, I belong very similar to many people. In this abyss of the identity, the mismidad and the similarity many philosophers sink and we suffocate many architects.
