The emergency of a new sensibility.
At the end of the decade of the 60, the world of the art suffers a change and is opened for contemporary works as the performance, the land art and the facilities site-specific. The materials, the processes and the tools turn, from this moment, into the major worries of the creators.
The artistic object stops taking importance as a passive element of contemplation, and on the other hand the new offers centre on the interaction with the spectator, overcoming the previous obsession with the form. The challenge consists of discovering if a new relation between object and user can be established also in the architecture and this way influír in the way of living.
Like example, in the year 1970 the artist Richard Serra, fulfils SHIFT, an installation incrusting sculptural elements in the landscape, establishing a new dialectics between the local perception and the relation of one itself with regard to the environment while he explores it.
In the moment that the artist across his intervention modifies these preexisting conditions forcing the spectator to realize way changes or “shifts”, it establishes a new local perception and the conscience of having experienced it in a different way.
In an analogous way the project here exposed, named SHIFT, tries to establish a new relation between user, architectural object and environment altering this way the way of living. Rejecting the idea of the architecture as a game compositivo of forms in the space, the intention centres on increasing the conscience of the spectator on his own local experience across strategies and spatial manipulations, and simultaneously on revealing and amplifying the importance of the materials and contemporary manners of construction and production.
In SHIFT surrounding manufacturer of steel is in use one cortén as the element that modifies meaningfully the relations between the user and the nature that surrounds it, being in turn an ideal material for his use near the sea.
The plot of the project is very narrow and elongated and is surrounded with several adjacent buildings. Since consequence gets up the surrounding one of the soil, and one resigns the use of the ground floor for the principal stays, establishing hereby a relation with the environment more free and interesting, since it is possible to enjoy this way better conference and a major intimacy. In turn the corners become wealthy to give more fluency to the exterior space, and to turn the surrounding one into a constant object.
The low part (secondary stays and machinery) is covered with finished mirror to multiply visually the effect of the vegetation.
The manipulations on the surrounding one like deformations or courts allow to adapt it to the demands of the user and simultaneously to establish the different relations with the environment.
The surrounding one remains hermetic in the boundaries with the lateral plots lacking in interest, small incisions being realized only to allow the entry of natural light.
On the other hand in the ends South and North carry out generous horizontal openings of panoramic format to allow this relation with more stimulant with the environment. In the front South produces another deformation to itself like retranqueo to allow the incorporation of the swimming pool with an ideal sun exposure a high height.
Only in the extreme Northwest the surrounding one descends to the ground floor by means of a stairs that allows the access of the user.
The interior of the housing is an extension of the exterior strategies. The natural wood awards to this space a hot and cozy dispute in contrast with the exterior of industrial character.
On having entered the housing the light of a great lucernario it receives us and allows us to see the sky and to conceal the sights of the adjacent houses. The stairs, placed rightly opposite to the entry, attracts us with his extent and lighting to ascend to the zone of “being”.
The most important stays center in the top floor (he cooks – salóncomedor, principal room, swimming pool). The low plant, in agreement with the project strategy it concentrates the secondary stays (guests’ rooms, tendedero, quarter of facilities and garage). The cover is a great terrace to enjoy a vision of 360 degrees of the bay coruñesa and to reach the promenade architecturale.
Architectural references. Villa Savoye – Villa Dall’Ava.
One has thought about two big works: the Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier and his contemporary update in the Villa dall’Ava by OMA. The elevation on the area of the principal stays and in turn the liberation of the area, the importance of the tour or promenade architecturale, the terrace garden or his version OMA’s swimming pool – garden, the panoramic sights from the covers, the stairs or ramp like space procesional, the continuous window. They all are references that have contributed inspiration to the project.
