Own House in Puerta de Hierro II, 1961

Since it comes being habitual in these dates, the Fundación Caja de Arquitectos has published his calendar for the next year, in this occasion dedicated the architect Francisco de Asís Cabrero (1912-2005), on there having be fulfilled the centenary of his birth.

The efeméride has remembered me when, precisely ten years ago, in December, 2001, I had the opportunity to visit, together with two excellent companions of career and of trips, and thanks to the amiability of Santiago Cabrero – son of the architect-, the housings that it had projected for his family in the urbanization of Madrid of Puerta de Hierro.

To cross the houses and the study of the architect – already very major at the time – in that cold and sunny winter taught us much more on architecture that the classes and the books seen up to the moment. It taught us to see, to travelling, to opening the eyes since Le Corbusier had said.

Gabrero dedicated last years of his life to a great project, a project that would never be built: his Cuatro Libros de Arquitectura. ALike the classic agreements, there compiled all that in that he had been interested along his career, using the trip as method of knowledge: «I Travel to understand», he was saying.

Today, a decade after my first trip of studies, and after great others realized to know the histories that give sense to these houses and to other works of the same period, only can only wish that any goal, any end, turns always into the beginning of a new trip.

For it, happy end of 2011 and better beginning of 2012.
