The Strange Death of Architectural Criticism

This one is the title of Martin Pawley’s posthumous book, one of the British critics of the second half of the 20th century, together with Reyner Banham and J. M. Richards, and it expresses a worrying fact: the critique of architecture, so influential a few decades ago, today has an irrelevant paper. In case of the critique of architecture there add two crises, the cultural one and the own one. It places in the most general phenomenon of the loss of representative paper of the intellectual progressives, who, though they exist, have fewer possibilities of expressing in the means that a few years ago. Also one adds that the same one to know of the architecture has lost decision-making paper and of leadership with relation to which it had in the period between the wars and in the postwar period, in which the policies of housing, inspired by architects, laid the foundations of the Welfare state. Today the architecture and the urbanism are servile to the financial and real-estate aims, and have scanty initiative to raise alternatives to what they impose the dominant interests. To this discredit they have contributed the complicity with the speculation, the corruption and the ostentation to be able.
