This book presents a history that still one had not written with a wide and interpretive vision. The above mentioned history is exposed from a contemporary perspective that approaches the complexity of the reality and describes a few experiences that are examples modélicos of policies of housing and of architectural typology. The studied cases are interpreted not only in his moment of accomplishment, but also in his later functioning. Of all of them, it puts on emphasis in the cases that have centered in the community thing and in the urban thing.
In the first part of the book there exposes the wide tradition that began with the experiments of the Existenzminimum, with the Höfe Vienneses and the German Siedlungen, and that continued with the English new towns and the French grands ensembles.
The second part explains the answers to the crisis of the modern urbanism and of the housing funcionalista, with the alternatives offered by the organicismo, the processes of participation, the critique tipológica and the theory and practice of the supports.
The third part approaches the contemporary systems: the organization in plant, the modular cocktails, the insertion in the city, the creation of neighborhoods and the overlapping in caps.
Finally, the fourth part analyzes the alternatives to the dominant systems: the rehabilitation, the environmental architectures, the forecast of the periphery, the remodeling of the marginal neighborhoods and the answers to situations of catastrophe.
To give a more wide vision of everything previous, there has been resigned the conventional eurocentrismo and to the exclusive presentation of works realized in the developed countries: it is to say, numerous experiences carried out in developing countries have been included. Likewise, there are not studied only conventional examples of new plant, but also rehabilitations and recyclings, sustainable architectures and emergency housings.
