El Zinemaldi donostiarra proyect\u00f3 durante esta su 58\u00aa edici\u00f3n del festival la pel\u00edcula documental How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr Foster?.<\/em> Una pel\u00edcula documental sobre la trayectoria del arquitecto Norman Foster, que visit\u00f3 el festival como si de una estrella hollywoodiense se tratase.<\/p>\n

Que la arquitectura ha sucumbido ante el poder de lo medi\u00e1tico, no es ning\u00fan secreto. Tanto los edificios, como sus arquitectos se han convertido en iconos de una modernidad en la que el poder de la imagen es capaz de convertir el barro en oro y viceversa. Imbuido en esta condici\u00f3n de estrella de la arquitectura mundial, Norman Foster autor de obras como el metro de Bilbao, la pol\u00e9mica reforma del Reichstag alem\u00e1n o el aeropuerto de Pek\u00edn considerado el m\u00e1s grande del mundo, compiti\u00f3 en la alfombra del festival de cine de Donostia con la mism\u00edsima Julia Roberts, siendo su visita una de las m\u00e1s esperadas por el p\u00fablico.<\/p>\n

La pel\u00edcula, que anteriormente se hab\u00eda presentado en la secci\u00f3n Panorama de la Berlinale, es un recorrido por la obra, vida y viajes de un hombre obsesionado con su trabajo, los aviones y el esqu\u00ed, y narra la trayectoria vital de un hombre que desde sus or\u00edgenes humildes hasta convertirse en una mega-estrella de la arquitectura ha tenido que superar entre otros obst\u00e1culos un c\u00e1ncer que le rob\u00f3 un valioso tiempo.<\/p>\n

Bajo un formato documental los directores Norberto L\u00f3pez Amado y Carlos Carcas diseccionan a uno de los pocos arquitectos que ha construido en todos los continentes y cuya fama y prestigio alcanzan el rango de planetarios.<\/p>\n

La cinta que toma como t\u00edtulo una pregunta que el legendario Buckminster Fuller lanz\u00f3 al entonces joven arquitecto que en aquel entonces colaboraba en su estudio. \u00ab\u00bfCu\u00e1nto pesa su edificio?, se\u00f1or Foster<\/em>\u00ab; sorprendido no supo qu\u00e9 decir. Al d\u00eda siguiente, ten\u00eda la respuesta. Pesaba demasiado. Y la mayor parte de los kilos se encontraban en los cimientos. En ese momento, Foster lo vio claro, el arquitecto nacido en la ciudad de Manchester en 1935, iniciar\u00eda su carrera proponiendo una arquitectura que aprovechar\u00eda la tecnolog\u00eda al m\u00e1ximo para aligerar sus edificios.<\/p>\n

De esta manera y tras la catarsis que le supuso su encuentro con Fuller, Foster lider\u00f3 la denominada arquitectura del high-tech, una arquitectura en la que menos peso, significa menos energ\u00eda y por lo tanto menor coste y mayor equilibrio medioambiental. Pero se trata tambi\u00e9n de una arquitectura que en ocasiones reivindica su condici\u00f3n de tecnol\u00f3gica por encima de la racionalidad, es decir se convierte en una arquitectura sobre actuada, tal vez como su propio proyectista que de su condici\u00f3n de arquitecto pasa a la de un actor que interpreta a un arquitecto, con lo que esto supone.<\/p>\n

Esta no es la primera transformaci\u00f3n de un arquitecto en actor. El cineasta Sydney Pollack ya realiz\u00f3 un documental sobre el famoso arquitecto Frank O. Gehry, en la que el arquitecto del museo Guggenheim de Bilbao, llenaba con su personalidad y energ\u00eda toda la pantalla.<\/p>\n

A partir de la profunda amistad que une al arquitecto y al famoso director de cine, se establecen una serie de encuentros y conversaciones que van esbozando las maneras y el proceso creativo de Gehry. El rodaje de la pel\u00edcula que hab\u00eda empezado en el a\u00f1o 2000 se alarg\u00f3 durante cinco a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

Tomando como punto de partida los apuntes originales que Gehry realiz\u00f3 para cada uno de sus grandes proyectos, el documental explora el proceso que sigue el arquitecto para transformar ese primer apunte abstracto en materia tangible, en una maqueta tridimensional construida normalmente con cart\u00f3n y celo a una escala muy grande, que permita en un proceso de acercamientos sucesivos ir modelando la forma v descubriendo su geometr\u00eda, antes de convertirlo en un edificio de titanio y vidrio, de hormig\u00f3n y acero, de madera y piedra.<\/p>\n

Pero sin duda el gran documental sobre un arquitecto es el realizado sobre la figura de Louis Khan uno de los grandes maestros de la arquitectura del siglo XX. Un hombre lleno de contradicciones que pas\u00f3 de crear importantes edificios a morir solo, pobre y abandonado en el ba\u00f1o de la estaci\u00f3n Penn en Nueva York, y cuyos restos mortales no pudieron ser identificados durante d\u00edas. Kahn logr\u00f3 una extraordinaria carrera en la arquitectura, sin embargo llevaba una desordenada y controvertida vida personal.<\/p>\n

Tal vez este desencuentro entre lo personal y lo profesional es lo que llevo a su hijo ileg\u00edtimo Nathaniel Khan a retratar la vida de su padre a trav\u00e9s de sus obras, entrevistas con arquitectos colaboradores o expertos en sus obras as\u00ed como con familiares, en un documental que fue nominado al Oscar en el a\u00f1o 2003 bajo el t\u00edtulo, Mi Arquitecto: El viaje de un hijo<\/em>.<\/p>\n
