Yvonne Farrell (1951) y Shelley McNamara (1952)<\/strong><\/a> se conocieron durante sus estudios universitarios en la Escuela de Arquitectura del University College Dublin (UCD).\u00a0Estudiaron con arquitectos racionalistas que acababan de llegar para desafiar el pensamiento y la cultura preexistentes de la instituci\u00f3n.\u00a0Al graduarse en 1976, se les ofreci\u00f3 la oportunidad \u00fanica de ense\u00f1ar en UCD, donde continuaron educando hasta 2006, y fueron nombrados profesores adjuntos en 2015.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cEnse\u00f1ar para nosotros siempre ha sido una realidad paralela\u201d,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

comenta Farrell.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cY es una forma de tratar de destilar nuestra experiencia y regalarla a otras generaciones para que realmente jueguen un papel en el crecimiento de esa cultura.\u00a0Entonces es una cosa de dos v\u00edas, aprendemos de los estudiantes y esperamos que los estudiantes aprendan de nosotros\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

En 1978, Farrell y McNamara, junto con otros tres, establecieron Grafton Architects, nombrados despu\u00e9s de la calle de su oficina original para priorizar la existencia del lugar, en lugar de los individuos.\u00a0Entre los proyectos importantes se incluyen North King Street Housing (Dubl\u00edn, Irlanda, 2000);\u00a0Instituto Urbano de Irlanda, University College Dublin (Dubl\u00edn, Irlanda 2002);\u00a0Solstice Arts Centre (Navan, Irlanda 2007);\u00a0Loreto Community School (Milford, Irlanda 2006);\u00a0Oficinas del Departamento de Finanzas (Dubl\u00edn, Irlanda, 2009);\u00a0y Escuela de Medicina, Universidad de Limerick (Limerick, Irlanda 2012).<\/p>\n

Reflexionando sobre su infancia, McNamara recuerda:<\/p>\n

\u201cMi despertar a la experiencia de la arquitectura fue una visita de ni\u00f1o a una enorme casa del siglo XVIII en la hermosa calle principal de la ciudad de Limerick, donde viv\u00eda mi t\u00eda. Su esposo ten\u00eda una hermosa tienda de farmacia bordeada de caoba en la planta baja, y ella dirig\u00eda una peque\u00f1a escuela Montessori en una habitaci\u00f3n sobre el hall de entrada. Esto despert\u00f3 una sensaci\u00f3n de asombro sobre lo que podr\u00eda ser una casa y recuerdo v\u00edvidamente la sensaci\u00f3n de espacio y luz, que fue una revelaci\u00f3n absoluta para m\u00ed\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Farrell comparte:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cUno de mis primeros recuerdos es cuando estaba acostada de espaldas sobre un coj\u00edn en el piso debajo del piano de cola que ten\u00edamos en casa. Mientras mi madre tocaba el piano encima de m\u00ed, recuerdo haber sido consciente del maravilloso espacio lleno de m\u00fasica debajo de ese instrumento de nogal. Crec\u00ed en Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Irlanda, una ciudad de calles y plazas, almacenes de piedra, casas artesanales y un canal que cortaba una l\u00ednea maravillosa en el paisaje. Un bosque de robles a las afueras de la ciudad ten\u00eda una alfombra de campanillas cada primavera. La naturaleza se sent\u00eda muy cerca\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

De los cinco socios originales, solo se quedaron Farrell y McNamara.\u00a0Su primera comisi\u00f3n internacional fuera de su Irlanda natal se produjo 25 a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, con la Universita Luigi Bocconi en Mil\u00e1n (Mil\u00e1n, Italia 2008), que fue galardonada con el Edificio Mundial del A\u00f1o en el Festival Mundial de Arquitectura inaugural de 2008 en Barcelona.\u00a0Otros proyectos internacionales han seguido desde entonces, con la aclamaci\u00f3n equivalente de la comunidad arquitect\u00f3nica.\u00a0El Campus Universitario UTEC Lima (Lima, Per\u00fa 2015) fue galardonado con el Premio Internacional RIBA 2016 por el Real Instituto de Arquitectos Brit\u00e1nicos (RIBA).\u00a0El Institut Mines T\u00e9l\u00e9com (Par\u00eds, Francia 2019) y la Universidad Toulouse 1 Capitole, Facultad de Econom\u00eda (Toulouse, Francia 2019) se completaron recientemente.<\/p>\n

Son becarios del Instituto Real de Arquitectos de Irlanda y becarios honorarios internacionales de RIBA.\u00a0Previamente ocuparon la c\u00e1tedra Kenzo Tange en la Harvard Graduate School of Design (2010) y la c\u00e1tedra Louis Kahn en la Universidad de Yale (2011) y han ense\u00f1ado en instituciones como \u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne y Academia di Architettura di Mendrisio, y dieron conferencias internacionales .<\/p>\n

Grafton Architects recibi\u00f3 el Premio Biennale di Venezia Silver Lion 2012 por la exposici\u00f3n\u00a0Arquitectura como nueva geograf\u00eda<\/i>\u00a0.\u00a0Farrell y McNamara fueron nombrados co-comisarios de 2018 para la 16a Exposici\u00f3n Internacional de Arquitectura, la Biennale di Venezia, con el tema\u00a0FREESPACE<\/i>\u00a0.\u00a0Fueron galardonados con la Medalla RIAI James Gandon por su trayectoria en Arquitectura por la RIAI en 2019 y la Medalla de Oro Real RIBA en 2020.<\/p>\n
