Una frase que explica de modo muy completo la raz\u00f3n por la cual el legado de este hombre ha tenido car\u00e1cter insustituible para el desarrollo de la arquitectura. Porque no fue s\u00f3lo a trav\u00e9s de la divulgaci\u00f3n ordenada de su obra, llevada a cabo con la intenci\u00f3n de hacer accesibles a todos las motivaciones que lo llevaron a hacer lo que hac\u00eda, publicada en los ocho vol\u00famenes de unas Obras Completas que, como dijo una vez el cr\u00edtico ingl\u00e9s Kenneth Frampton, son la mejor exposici\u00f3n del <em>M\u00e9todo de la arquitectura moderna<\/em>. Sino tambi\u00e9n por el ejercicio permanente de la escritura utilizando una prosa muy personal, atractiva, apasionada, impregnada de una visi\u00f3n humanista de ambici\u00f3n universal que lo convirti\u00f3 en vocero excepcional de las preocupaciones de su tiempo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mi formaci\u00f3n como arquitecto debe mucho a ese pensamiento que Le Corbusier se esforz\u00f3 en trasmitir. O -me corrijo- a la interpretaci\u00f3n que le he dado a la palabra con la que dese\u00f3 expresarlo. Ya no son las formas de su arquitectura lo que repercute en lo que hago, aunque ellas se\u00f1alen unas coordenadas importantes, sino el deseo de hacer honor a una actitud, a una visi\u00f3n del papel del arquitecto y de la arquitectura, a un modo de ver el mundo desde la disciplina, que me parecen referencias esenciales para entender lo que tenemos ante nosotros.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El legado de este hombre excepcional incluy\u00f3, precisamente como parte de su visi\u00f3n del mundo, mucho de su vida personal. As\u00ed nos enteramos por ejemplo de la devoci\u00f3n por su madre, a quien le construy\u00f3 una casita en las orlllas del lago L\u00e9man en Suiza que es un verdadero poema de sencillez y de clarividencia sobre los recursos de la arquitectura nueva, lejos de toda pretensi\u00f3n, hermosamente simple, lecci\u00f3n permanente para todo arquitecto que desee conservar una visi\u00f3n de lo esencial. O de su quieta relaci\u00f3n con Ivonne Gallis quien permanec\u00eda concientemente en un segundo plano lejos de toda publicidad, pero que fue compa\u00f1era constante; expresada en una conmovedora descripci\u00f3n de sus \u00faltimos momentos, a los cuales asisti\u00f3, tom\u00e1ndole de la mano.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O de su pasi\u00f3n por el mar, por el Mediterr\u00e1neo, que visitaba todos los veranos, buscando un lugar solitario en Roquebrunne-Cap Martin, al sur de Francia, justo al lado de la frontera con Italia, donde construy\u00f3 una caba\u00f1ita m\u00ednima, que se conoce como Le Cabanon en franc\u00e9s, basada en dimensiones del Modulor, el sistema normativo al cual le dedic\u00f3 gran parte de su vida. De su b\u00fasqueda hacia los l\u00edmites meridionales (incansablemente hacia el Sur, escribi\u00f3 una vez) que lo llev\u00f3 a construir una ciudad en La India, Chandigarh, que hoy es patrimonio cultural de ese pa\u00eds milenario. Y explican el porqu\u00e9 muchas de sus ense\u00f1anzas germinaron con vigor y brillantez en estos pa\u00edses de sol y calor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ya he mencionado que un viaje reciente junto a mi esposa fue en gran parte un peregrinaje que a trav\u00e9s de la arquitectura buscaba revivir ciertos mensajes de este personaje del mundo captados en \u00e9pocas tempranas de mi vida. Y su culminaci\u00f3n era un deseo personal de conocer la peque\u00f1a bah\u00eda en la cual, nadando como gustaba de hacer en las ma\u00f1anas, su coraz\u00f3n dej\u00f3 de latir. Hab\u00eda le\u00eddo de las circunstancias de ese postrer momento. Que su cuerpo hab\u00eda sido visto por un pescador y llevado a tierra. Que se le hicieron homenajes f\u00fanebres unos d\u00edas despu\u00e9s en el patio de honor del Louvre donde pronunci\u00f3 unas palabras Andr\u00e9 Malraux. Y que luego hab\u00eda sido inhumado en el cementerio de Roquebrunne donde yac\u00eda su esposa fallecida unos a\u00f1os antes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hab\u00eda visto una foto de una conmemoraci\u00f3n reciente en ese lugar y tuve deseos de visitarlo para rendir tributo a este hombre, que siendo tan distante en el tiempo, de inalcanzable talla de artista y separado de m\u00ed geogr\u00e1fica y culturalmente, he incorporado sin embargo a una especie de santoral privado junto a otras personas, artistas o no, seguramente pecadoras, pero personajes claves en la formaci\u00f3n de mi conciencia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As\u00ed, al apenas llegar al hotel, tomamos ruta hacia el cementerio.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Est\u00e1 construido a base de terrazas en una fuerte pendiente rocosa que mira hacia el mar. Fuimos orientados hasta la tumba por uno de esos franceses simp\u00e1ticos t\u00edpicos del Sur de ese pa\u00eds que reparaba la tumba de su familia. Llegamos a la terraza J donde unos metros antes de un espacio dedicado a los muertos de la \u00faltima guerra, presidido por la bandera francesa y un pino cuidadosamente podado como una escultura abstracta, se encuentra la sencilla sepultura de Ivonne y \u201cCharles-\u00c9douard Jeanneret dit Le Corbusier\u201d, fallecido el 27 de Agosto de 1965, ayer hace 43 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All\u00ed estuvimos mi mujer y yo durante unos minutos en recogimiento y llevando el pensamiento hacia ciertos mundos personales inevitablemente unidos al misterio de la relaci\u00f3n entre uno y el mundo, entre las limitaciones de la peque\u00f1ez personal y las fronteras abiertas por seres humanos que vivieron para dejar huella intemporal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hoy que escribo recuerdo un foro en nuestra Facultad de Arquitectura promovido por <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/carlos-raul-villanueva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Carlos Raul Villanueva<\/strong><\/a> unos meses despu\u00e9s de ese Agosto, en el cual particip\u00e9 como joven profesor de quien se conoc\u00eda el entusiasmo por la obra del ausente. Ese d\u00eda Villanueva se expres\u00f3 vivamente emocionado, hasta casi las l\u00e1grimas, de aquel a quien admiraba y consider\u00f3 su amigo. El otro participante, muy al d\u00eda, muy iconoclasta \u00e9l, habl\u00f3 con la distancia hacia el personaje que ya empezaba a ponerse de moda. Yo hice referencia a los intentos, unos a\u00f1os antes, en los que particip\u00e9 activamente, de invitarlo a construir en Caracas el Palacio de Justicia, invitaci\u00f3n que declin\u00f3 por razones de salud. Y tal vez habl\u00e9 del tesoro personal que era y es para m\u00ed una carta que me envi\u00f3, con un dibujo del delta del Ganges hecho desde un avi\u00f3n, destinado a una publicaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica que pensaba hacer sobre su obra. Ou -me corrixo- \u00e1 interpretaci\u00f3n que lle dei \u00e1 palabra coa que desexou expresalo. Xa non son as formas da s\u00faa arquitectura o que repercute no que fago, a\u00ednda que elas sinalen unhas coordenadas importantes, sen\u00f3n o desexo de facer honra a unha actitude, a unha visi\u00f3n do papel do arquitecto e da arquitectura, a un modo de ver o mundo desde a disciplina, que me parecen referencias esenciais para entender o que temos ante n\u00f3s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O legado deste home excepcional inclu\u00edu, precisamente como parte da s\u00faa visi\u00f3n do mundo, moito da s\u00faa vida persoal. A phrase that explains in a very complete way the reason why the legacy of this man has had irreplaceable character for the development of architecture. Because it was not only through the orderly dissemination of his work, carried out with the intention of making accessible to all the motivations that led him to do what he was doing, published in the eight volumes of Complete Works that, as one once the English critic Kenneth Frampton, they are the best exposition of the <em>Method of modern architecture<\/em>. But also for the permanent exercise of writing using a very personal, attractive, passionate prose, impregnated with a humanistic vision of universal ambition that made him an exceptional spokesman for the concerns of his time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My training as an architect owes much to that thought that Le Corbusier endeavored to transmit. Or &#8211; I correct myself &#8211; to the interpretation that I have given to the word with which he wished to express it. It is no longer the forms of its architecture that have an impact on what I do, even if they point out some important coordinates, but rather the desire to honor an attitude, a vision of the role of the architect and architecture, in a way of seeing the world from the discipline, which seem to me essential references to understand what is before us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The legacy of this exceptional man included, precisely as part of his vision of the world, much of his personal life. Thus we learn for example of devotion to his mother, who built a small house on the banks of Lake Geneva in Switzerland that is a true poem of simplicity and clairvoyance on the resources of new architecture, far from any pretension, beautifully simple, permanent lesson for every architect who wishes to preserve a vision of the essential. Or of his quiet relationship with Ivonne Gallis who remained consciously in the background away from all publicity, but who was a constant companion; expressed in a moving description of his last moments, which he attended, taking him by the hand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Or of his passion for the sea, for the Mediterranean, which he visited every summer, looking for a solitary place in Roquebrunne-Cap Martin, in the south of France, right next to the border with Italy, where he built a tiny cabin, which known as Le Cabanon in French, based on dimensions of the Modulor, the normative system to which he dedicated a large part of his life. From his search towards the southern limits (tirelessly to the South, he once wrote) that led him to build a city in India, Chandigarh, which today is the cultural heritage of that millennial country. And they explain why many of their teachings germinated with vigor and brilliance in these countries of sun and heat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have already mentioned that a recent trip with my wife was largely a pilgrimage that through architecture sought to revive certain messages of this character of the world captured in early times of my life. And its culmination was a personal desire to know the little bay in which, swimming as he liked to do in the mornings, his heart stopped beating. I had read about the circumstances of that last moment. That his body had been seen by a fisherman and taken to land. That funeral tributes were made a few days later in the courtyard of honor of the Louvre where he spoke a few words Andr\u00e9 Malraux. And then he had been buried in the cemetery of Roquebrunne where his wife lay a few years before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I had seen a photo of a recent commemoration in that place and I wanted to visit it to pay tribute to this man, who being so distant in time, of unreachable size of artist and separated from me geographically and culturally, I have nevertheless incorporated a kind of private santoral with other people, artists or not, surely sinners, but key characters in the formation of my conscience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus, upon arriving at the hotel, we took a route to the cemetery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is built with terraces on a steep rocky slope that faces the sea. We were guided to the grave by one of those friendly Frenchmen typical of the South of that country who repaired the grave of his family. We reach the terrace J where a few meters before a space dedicated to the dead of the last war, presided over by the French flag and a pine carefully pruned as an abstract sculpture, is the simple grave of Ivonne and \u201cCharles-\u00c9douard Jeanneret dit Le Corbusier\u201d, died on August 27, 1965, yesterday 43 years ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There my wife and I were for a few minutes in recollection and taking the thought to certain personal worlds inevitably linked to the mystery of the relationship between one and the world, between the limitations of personal smallness and the borders opened by human beings who lived to leave timeless footprint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today I write I remember a forum in our Faculty of Architecture promoted by <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/en\/tag\/carlos-raul-villanueva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Carlos Raul Villanueva<\/strong><\/a>a a few months after that August, in which I participated as a young teacher who knew the enthusiasm for the work of the absentee. That day Villanueva expressed himself excitedly, until almost the tears, of the one whom he admired and considered his friend. The other participant, very up-to-date, very iconoclastic, spoke with the distance towards the character that was already starting to become fashionable. I referred to the attempts, some years before, in which I actively participated, to invite him to build the Palace of Justice in Caracas, an invitation that he declined for health reasons. And maybe I talked about the personal treasure that was and is for me a letter that he sent me, with a drawing of the Ganges delta made from an airplane, destined for an academic publication that he thought about doing his work.
