Su imagen nocturna es uno de los iconos de la Fotograf\u00eda de Arquitectura moderna por excelencia, y pese a que no era la m\u00e1s acorde a las intenciones del arquitecto<sup>1<\/sup>, la magn\u00edfica fotograf\u00eda de <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/julius-shulman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julius Shulman<\/a> (fig.3) acabar\u00e1 por igualar en importancia (si no superar) a la obra en s\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Por su parte, la casa Catas\u00fas en Sitges es la segunda casa (tras la Ugalde) que logra construir <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/jose-antonio-coderch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jos\u00e9 Antonio Coderch <\/a>(acompa\u00f1ado de <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/manuel-valls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manuel Valls<\/a>) en los 50, y da pie a una serie de viviendas unifamiliares<sup>2<\/sup> con temas afines (Ballv\u00e9, Gili, Uriach, Rozes, etc.). Su imagen nocturna (fig.4) es una de las pioneras de la arquitectura espa\u00f1ola en la posguerra, y coincide con tomas similares realizadas tambi\u00e9n por <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/francesc-catala-roca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Francesc Catal\u00e1-Roca<\/a> para la casa Senillosa en Cadaqu\u00e9s en ese mismo a\u00f1o de 1956. Fotograf\u00eda nocturna de la casa Catas\u00fas de Jos\u00e9 Antonio Coderch (Sitges, 1955-56) realizada por Francesc Catal\u00e1-Roca en 1957.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">De esta manera, al comparar sendas im\u00e1genes se advierte que el encuadre de la Catas\u00fas permite emular el plano volumen horizontal de la Kaufmann: con una profundidad visual construida a base de planos paralelos al espectador, se muestra la cubierta volada del primer plano elevada ligeramente por encima de la del cuerpo de dormitorios del fondo. Este detalle permite a Shulman ocultar el volumen retranqueado de la planta superior y dejar que toda la silueta de la casa quede completamente horizontal y por debajo del perfil monta\u00f1oso del fondo, creando as\u00ed una cierta estampa rom\u00e1ntica en clave \u201cpictorialista\u201d poco acorde a su modernidad arquitect\u00f3nica. Por su parte, Catal\u00e1-Roca cierra m\u00e1s el plano para concentrarse en la parcela dom\u00e9stica, ya que no dispone de ese marco natural.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Este aspecto hace que la construcci\u00f3n geom\u00e9trica de su toma sea m\u00e1s precisa y m\u00e1s fiel al esp\u00edritu moderno de la casa de Sitges, mostrando la alineaci\u00f3n del techo del porche con el borde largo de la piscina y revelando la planta en \u2018L\u2019 que adopta la casa en torno al jard\u00edn privado y la piscina, convertida \u00e9sta ahora en n\u00edtido espejo nocturno. Quiz\u00e1 el inter\u00e9s de Coderch por la Fotograf\u00eda<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0hace que el resultado final de esta toma nocturna est\u00e9 bastante condicionado por el control visual y el sentido compositivo del arquitecto, cosa que Neutra no hace con la hom\u00f3loga de Shulman (aunque s\u00ed con la mayor\u00eda de las fotos de ese reportaje, seg\u00fan el testimonio del fot\u00f3grafo<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Muy similar es la luz crepuscular con la que Catal\u00e1-Roca realiza su toma, para evitar ese fuerte desequilibrio por contraste entre zonas distintas del mismo fotograma. Sin embargo, el resultado final acusa m\u00e1s diferencias, sobre todo debido a la experiencia y sofisticaci\u00f3n del trabajo de Shulman. Este consigue la m\u00edtica imagen combinando varios tipos de exposici\u00f3n mezclando el contraste de luces y sombras \u00f3ptimo entre los diversos negativos de la misma toma<sup>5<\/sup>, cosa que Catal\u00e1-Roca no llega a hacer. Shulman crea una imagen irreal de la casa, superponiendo en la imagen final las luces m\u00e1s id\u00f3neas para cada parte del encuadre, logradas a veces incluso con fuentes de luz m\u00f3viles que se eliminan posteriormente. Catal\u00e1-Roca simplemente hace una toma real, una magn\u00edfica instant\u00e1nea, pero con el inconveniente de no poder contar con m\u00e1s fuentes de luz artificial que las instaladas en la casa, lo que justifica la aparici\u00f3n de zonas muy contrastadas en la imagen final, careciendo de esa extensa riqueza de grises intermedios que aportan una cualidad sensual y hasta glamurosa<sup>6<\/sup> a la hom\u00f3loga californiana.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A todo esto hay que a\u00f1adir la asidua colaboraci\u00f3n entre el experto consultor en Luminotecnia, Richard Kelly, y el arquitecto Richard Neutra hace que la idea arquitect\u00f3nica se vea reforzada mediante un<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cproyecto luminot\u00e9cnico\u201d,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">contemplando ya desde su gestaci\u00f3n una estudiada combinaci\u00f3n de fuentes de luz artificial. Seg\u00fan Kelly<sup>7<\/sup>, la<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201ciluminaci\u00f3n ambiental\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">permite dar con el car\u00e1cter y confort adecuados a cada estancia; la<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201ciluminaci\u00f3n focal\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">sirve para enfatizar y jerarquizar los elementos del escenario arquitect\u00f3nico; y el<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cjuego de brillantes\u201d \u2014\u201c<em>play of brilliants<\/em>\u201d, en ingl\u00e9s\u2014,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">sit\u00faa una serie de destellos de forma m\u00e1s figurativa. Si bien no ha podido ser determinado el grado de intervenci\u00f3n de Kelly en la casa de Palm Springs, no es menos cierto que Neutra repite muchos de los detalles ensayados con \u00e9l en los estudios luminot\u00e9cnicos precedentes para las casas Lyndon (1943) o Miller (1937); a saber: la iluminaci\u00f3n indirecta de los techos desde abajo hacia arriba, el \u00e9nfasis en determinadas paredes ba\u00f1adas con mayor intensidad, la disposici\u00f3n de l\u00edneas continuas de fluorescencia en el extremo de las cubiertas en voladizo por el exterior de la casa, y la colocaci\u00f3n de ciertos focos en posiciones clave como la piscina o tras ciertos elementos vegetales del jard\u00edn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Evidentemente, Coderch, por muy interesado y atento que estaba a la obra contempor\u00e1nea de Neutra, a\u00fan no logra poner en pr\u00e1ctica esos recursos luminot\u00e9cnicos en la casa Catas\u00fas \u2014quiz\u00e1 porque 1956 es a\u00fan demasiado pronto para entender su artificiosa complejidad\u2014, pero usa muy intencionadamente su mejor fotograf\u00eda nocturna para representar su cualidad \u201cmoderna\u201d. Desconocemos exactamente cu\u00e1ndo pudo Coderch haber visto por primera vez aquella m\u00edtica foto de la \u201cCasa del desierto\u201d de Neutra\/Shulman, pero su arrebatador atractivo visual hizo que deambulara en la mente del arquitecto catal\u00e1n alg\u00fan tiempo antes de que ese \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/objet-trouve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>objet trouv\u00e9<\/em><\/a>\u201d, impreso en alguna revista de la \u00e9poca, fuera interpretada en sus propias claves. A s\u00faa imaxe nocturna \u00e9 un das iconas da Fotograf\u00eda de Arquitectura moderna por excelencia, e a pesar de que non era a m\u00e1is acorde \u00e1s intenci\u00f3ns do arquitecto<sup>1<\/sup>, a magn\u00edfica fotograf\u00eda de <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/gl\/tag\/julius-shulman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julius Shulman<\/a> (fig.3) acabar\u00e1 por igualar en importancia (se non superar) \u00e1 obra en si.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pola s\u00faa banda, a casa Catas\u00fas en Sitges \u00e9 a segunda casa (tras a Ugalde) que logra constru\u00edr <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/gl\/tag\/jose-antonio-coderch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jos\u00e9 Antonio Coderch\u00a0<\/a>(acompa\u00f1ado de <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/gl\/tag\/manuel-valls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manuel Valls<\/a>) nos 50, e d\u00e1 p\u00e9 a unha serie de vivendas unifamiliares<sup>2<\/sup> con temas af\u00edns (Ballv\u00e9, Gili, Uriach, Rozes, etc.). A s\u00faa imaxe nocturna ( fig.4) \u00e9 unha das pioneiras da arquitectura espa\u00f1ola na posguerra, e coincide con tomas similares realizadas tam\u00e9n por <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/gl\/tag\/francesc-catala-roca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Francesc Catal\u00e1-Roca<\/a> para a casa Senillosa en Cadaqu\u00e9s nese mesmo ano de 1956. Fotograf\u00eda nocturna da casa Catas\u00fas de Jos\u00e9 Antonio Coderch (Sitges, 1955-56) realizada por Francesc Catal\u00e1-Roca en 1957.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Desta maneira, ao comparar senllas imaxes adv\u00edrtese que o encadre da Catas\u00fas permite emular o plano volume horizontal da Kaufmann: cunha profundidade visual constru\u00edda a base de planos paralelos ao espectador, m\u00f3strase a cuberta voada do primeiro plano elevada lixeiramente por encima da do corpo de dormitorios do fondo. Este detalle permite a Shulman ocultar o volume retranqueado da planta superior e deixar que toda a silueta da casa quede completamente horizontal e por baixo do perfil monta\u00f1oso do fondo, creando as\u00ed una certa estampa rom\u00e1ntica en clave \u201cpictorialista\u201d pouco acorde \u00e1 s\u00faa modernidade arquitect\u00f3nica. Pola s\u00faa banda, Catal\u00e1-Roca pecha m\u00e1is o plano para concentrarse na parcela dom\u00e9stica, xa que non disp\u00f3n dese marco natural.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Este aspecto fai que a construci\u00f3n xeom\u00e9trica da s\u00faa toma sexa m\u00e1is precisa e m\u00e1is fiel ao esp\u00edrito moderno da casa de Sitges, mostrando a ali\u00f1aci\u00f3n do teito do soportal co bordo longo da piscina e revelando a planta en \u2018L\u2019 que adopta a casa en torno ao xard\u00edn privado e a piscina, convertida esta agora en n\u00edtido espello nocturno. Quiz\u00e1 o interese de Coderch pola Fotograf\u00eda<sup>3<\/sup> fai que o resultado final desta toma nocturna estea bastante condicionado polo control visual e o sentido compositivo do arquitecto, cousa que Neutra non fai coa hom\u00f3loga de Shulman (a\u00ednda que si coa maior\u00eda das fotos desa reportaxe, segundo o testemu\u00f1o do fot\u00f3grafo<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moi similar \u00e9 a luz crepuscular coa que Catal\u00e1-Roca realiza a s\u00faa toma, para evitar ese forte desequilibrio por contraste entre zonas distintas do mesmo fotograma. Con todo, o resultado final acusa m\u00e1is diferenzas, sobre todo debido \u00e1 experiencia e sofisticaci\u00f3n do traballo de Shulman. Leste consegue a m\u00edtica imaxe combinando varios tipos de exposici\u00f3n mesturando o contraste de luces e sombras \u00f3ptimo entre os diversos negativos da mesma toma5, cousa que Catal\u00e1-Roca non chega a facer. Shulman crea unha imaxe irreal da casa, superpo\u00f1endo na imaxe final as luces m\u00e1is id\u00f3neas para cada parte do encadre, logradas \u00e1s veces mesmo con fontes de luz m\u00f3biles que se eliminan posteriormente. Catal\u00e1-Roca simplemente fai unha toma real, unha magn\u00edfica instant\u00e1nea, pero co inconveniente de non poder contar con m\u00e1is fontes de luz artificial que as instaladas na casa, o que xustifica a aparici\u00f3n de zonas moi contrastadas na imaxe final, carecendo desa extensa riqueza de grises intermedios que achegan unha calidade sensual e ata glamurosa<sup>6<\/sup> \u00e1 hom\u00f3loga californiana.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A todo isto hai que engadir a asidua colaboraci\u00f3n entre o experto consultor en Luminotecnia, Richard Kelly, e o arquitecto Richard Neutra fai que a idea arquitect\u00f3nica v\u00e9xase reforzada mediante un<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cproxecto luminot\u00e9cnico\u201d,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">contemplando xa desde a s\u00faa xestaci\u00f3n unha estudada combinaci\u00f3n de fontes de luz artificial. Segundo Kelly<sup>7<\/sup>, a<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201ciluminaci\u00f3n ambiental\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">permite dar co car\u00e1cter e confort adecuados a cada estancia; a<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201ciluminaci\u00f3n focal\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">serve para salientar e xerarquizar os elementos do escenario arquitect\u00f3nico; e o<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cxogo de brillantes\u201d \u2014\u201c<em>play of brilliants<\/em>\u201d, en ingl\u00e9s\u2014,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">sit\u00faa unha serie de escintileos de forma m\u00e1is figurativa. A\u00ednda que non puido ser determinado o grao de intervenci\u00f3n de Kelly na casa de Palm Springs, non \u00e9 menos certo que Neutra repite moitos dos detalles ensaiados con el nos estudos luminot\u00e9cnicos precedentes para as casas Lyndon (1943) ou Miller (1937); a saber: a iluminaci\u00f3n indirecta dos teitos desde abaixo cara arriba, a \u00e9nfase en determinadas paredes ba\u00f1adas con maior intensidade, a disposici\u00f3n de li\u00f1as continuas de fluorescencia no extremo das cubertas en voladizo polo exterior da casa, e a colocaci\u00f3n de certos focos en posici\u00f3ns crave como a piscina ou tras certos elementos vexetais do xard\u00edn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Evidentemente, Coderch, por moi interesado e atento que estaba \u00e1 obra contempor\u00e1nea de Neutra, a\u00ednda non logra po\u00f1er en pr\u00e1ctica eses recursos luminot\u00e9cnicos na casa Catas\u00fas \u2014quiz\u00e1 porque 1956 \u00e9 a\u00ednda demasiado pronto para entender a s\u00faa artificiosa complexidade\u2014, pero usa moi intencionadamente a s\u00faa mellor fotograf\u00eda nocturna para representar a s\u00faa calidade \u201cmoderna\u201d. Desco\u00f1ecemos exactamente cando puido Coderch ver por primeira vez aquela m\u00edtica foto da \u201cCasa do deserto\u201d de Neutra\/ Shulman, pero o seu arrebatador atractivo visual fixo que deambulase na mente do arquitecto catal\u00e1n alg\u00fan tempo antes de que ese \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/gl\/tag\/objet-trouve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>objet trouv\u00e9<\/em><\/a>\u201d, impreso nalgunha revista da \u00e9poca, f\u00f3ra interpretada nas s\u00faas propias claves. His nocturnal image is one of the icons of Modern Architecture Photography par excellence, and although it was not the most appropriate to the intentions of the architect<sup>1<\/sup>, the magnificent photograph of <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/en\/tag\/julius-shulman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julius Shulman<\/a> (fig.3) will end up equaling in importance (if not overcome) to the work itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For its part, the house Catas\u00fas in Sitges is the second house (after the Ugalde) managed by <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/en\/tag\/jose-antonio-coderch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jos\u00e9 Antonio Coderch<\/a> (accompanied by <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/en\/tag\/manuel-valls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manuel Valls<\/a>) in the 50s, and leads to a series of single family homes<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0with related themes (Ballv\u00e9, Gili , Uriach, Rozes, etc.). Its nocturnal image (fig.4) is one of the pioneers of Spanish architecture in the postwar period, and it coincides with similar shots also made by <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/francesc-catala-roca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Francesc Catal\u00e1-Roca<\/a> for the house Senillosa in Cadaqu\u00e9s in that same year of 1956. This detail allows Shulman to hide the recessed volume of the upper floor and let the entire silhouette of the house be completely horizontal and below the mountainous profile of the background, thus creating a certain romantic stamp in a \u201cpictorialist\u201d key, little in keeping with its modernity architectural On the other hand, Catal\u00e1-Roca closes the plan more to concentrate on the domestic plot, since it does not have that natural framework.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This aspect makes the geometric construction of its shot more accurate and more faithful to the modern spirit of the Sitges house, showing the alignment of the roof of the porch with the long edge of the pool and revealing the \u2018L\u2019 floor that adopts the house around the private garden and the pool, now converted into a clear night mirror. Perhaps Coderch&#8217;s interest in Photography<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0means that the final result of this night shot is largely conditioned by the architect&#8217;s visual control and compositional sense, something that Neutra does not do with Shulman&#8217;s counterpart (although it does with most of the photos) of that report, according to the testimony of the photographer<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Very similar is the crepuscular light with which Catal\u00e1-Roca takes his shot, to avoid this strong imbalance by contrast between different areas of the same frame. However, the final result shows more differences, especially due to the experience and sophistication of Shulman&#8217;s work. This achieves the mythical image by combining several types of exposure mixing the contrast of lights and shadows optimal between the various negatives of the same shot<sup>5<\/sup>, something that Catal\u00e1-Roca does not manage to do. Shulman creates an unreal image of the house, superimposing on the final image the most suitable lights for each part of the frame, sometimes achieved even with mobile light sources that are subsequently removed. Catal\u00e1-Roca simply makes a real shot, a magnificent snapshot, but with the inconvenience of not having more artificial light sources than those installed in the house, which justifies the appearance of highly contrasted areas in the final image, lacking that extensive wealth of intermediate grays that provide a sensual and even glamorous<sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0quality to the Californian counterpart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To all this we must add the assiduous collaboration between expert consultant in Lighting, Richard Kelly, and the architect Richard Neutra makes the architectural idea is reinforced by a<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLighting project\u201d,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">contemplating since its gestation a studied combination of artificial light sources. According to elly<sup>7<\/sup>, the<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEnvironmental lighting\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">allows you to find the right character and comfort for each stay; the<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFocal lighting\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">it serves to emphasize and hierarchize the elements of the architectural scene; and the<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2014\u201c<em>play of brilliants<\/em>\u201d\u2014,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">places a series of flashes in a more figurative way. Although it has not been possible to determine the degree of intervention of Kelly in the Palm Springs house, it is nevertheless true that Neutra repeats many of the details tested with him in the previous lighting studies for the houses Lyndon (1943) or Miller (1937). ); namely, the indirect lighting of ceilings from the bottom upwards, the emphasis on certain walls bathed with greater intensity, the arrangement of continuous lines of fluorescence at the end of the cantilevered roofs on the outside of the house, and the placement of Certain spotlights in key positions such as the pool or after certain vegetable elements of the garden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Obviously, Coderch, no matter how interested and attentive he was to Neutra&#8217;s contemporary work, has not yet managed to put these lighting resources into practice at the Catas\u00fas house &#8211; perhaps because 1956 is still too early to understand his artificial complexity &#8211; but uses very intentionally his best nighttime photo to represent his \u201cmodern\u201d quality. We do not know exactly when Coderch could have seen for the first time that mythical photo of Neutra \/ Shulman&#8217;s \u201cDesert House\u201d, but its captivating visual appeal caused it to wander in the mind of the Catalan architect some time before that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/en\/tag\/objet-trouve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>objet trouv\u00e9<\/em><\/a>\u201d, printed in some magazine of the time, was interpreted in its own keys.
