Curtis (I) | bRijUNi[:]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[:es]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En el a\u00f1o 2015, coincidiendo con el 50 aniversario de la muerte del prol\u00edfico maestro Le Corbusier, la editorial Phaidon se reedit\u00f3 la ampliaci\u00f3n del libro <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/le-corbusier-ideas-forms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le Corbusier. Ideas and Forms<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0de <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/william-j-r-curtis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William J.R Curtis<\/a><\/strong>, historiador de la arquitectura, cr\u00edtico, escritor, pintor y fot\u00f3grafo brit\u00e1nico.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>William J.R Curtis<\/strong> es especialmente conocido por su cr\u00edtica de la historia de la arquitectura moderna y sus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.circulobellasartes.com\/revistaminerva\/articulo.php?id=130\">reflexiones<\/a> nunca dejan indiferentes.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u201cTodo el mundo encuentra en Le Corbusier lo que va buscando, sea lo que sea.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/cultura\/2015\/06\/28\/558ee027268e3e440e8b4581.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William J.R Curtis<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63229\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-63229\" src=\"http:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Entrevista-William-J.-R.-Curtis-Villa-Savoye-2011.jpg\" alt=\"William J. Curtis, Villa Savoye, 2011<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Esta segunda edici\u00f3n de <em><a href=\"http:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/le-corbusier-ideas-forms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le Corbusier. Ideas and Forms<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>supone un gran cambio con respecto a la primera y no s\u00f3lo en cuanto al formato de mayores dimensiones, sino sobre todo porque a\u00f1ade la parte IV donde aparecen cinco nuevos cap\u00edtulos. Siendo esta la principal novedad y justificaci\u00f3n de esta segunda magn\u00edfica edici\u00f3n, junto con la revisi\u00f3n de argumentos e ideas que han sido reforzadas o lo contrario, tal como usted expone en el prefacio, \u00bfqu\u00e9 otras razones le han impulsado a acometer esta revisi\u00f3n y c\u00f3mo animar\u00eda a aquellos que ya conocieron la primera edici\u00f3n a acercarse a esta segunda?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La segunda edici\u00f3n de <i>Le Corbusier: Ideas y Formas <\/i>ha supuesto una completa transformaci\u00f3n del libro a todos los niveles: contenido, forma, ilustraciones, im\u00e1genes y material, bibliogaf\u00eda. Era mi objetivo preservar el alma de la primera edici\u00f3n de 1986 expandiendo de una manera ordenada el cuerpo principal. En todo momento me preocup\u00e9 de la calidad literaria y de que fuera equilibrado. Mencionas los cuatro nuevos cap\u00edtulos al final de la secci\u00f3n \u201cPrincipios y Transformaciones\u201d. Representan una reflexi\u00f3n sin precedentes sobre los temas b\u00e1sicos y las ideas central del universo creativo de Le Corbusier. Pero hay numerosas revisiones y ampliaciones a lo largo del libro, por ejemplo la Villa Savoie en Poissy ahora tiene un capitulo detallado para ella sola que la muestra mucho m\u00e1s en detalle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El registro completo y los argumentos sobre los cambios se recogen en el Prefacio a esta segunda edici\u00f3n y en las Nota Bibliogr\u00e1fica del final donde se explica la re-estructuraci\u00f3n del libro con mucho detalle incluyendo el uso de m\u00e1s de ciento treinta de mis propias fotograf\u00edas e incontables reproducciones de alta resoluci\u00f3n de dibujos de Le Corbusier. Con tiempo y con la perspectiva de m\u00e1s de un cuarto de siglo, era obvio que el libro se merec\u00eda una nueva edici\u00f3n, incluso a pesar de que la primera edici\u00f3n muchas veces era referida ya como un cl\u00e1sico. Ideas and Forms\u201d<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>El pasado a\u00f1o 2015 se celebr\u00f3 el 50 aniversario de la muerte de Le Corbusier y se programaron muchos actos y congresos que conmemoran su figura. Usted habla de un \u201ceclipse temporal\u201d en la reputaci\u00f3n de Le Corbusier cuando se public\u00f3 la primera edici\u00f3n de <em>Le Corbusier. Ideas and Forms<\/em>, s\u00f3lo veinte a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de la desaparici\u00f3n de Le Corbusier. \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 cree que treinta a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de aquella primera edici\u00f3n su figura y sus ideas se han revalorizado y asistimos a un nuevo florecimiento de obras, lecturas y re-lecturas de su vida y obra?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cuando la primera edici\u00f3n fue publicada en 1986 hubo muchas visiones distorsionadas que circularon en relaci\u00f3n a Le Corbusier. Algunas de ellas ven\u00edan de la ret\u00f3rica del post modernismo en la que se tend\u00eda a demonizarla y culparle de todos los\u00a0 errores de la modernizaci\u00f3n y la urbanizaci\u00f3n (moderna). Fue tratado como un funcionalista sin ra\u00edces. Por eso la primera edici\u00f3n situaba a Le Corbusier con una perspectiva hist\u00f3rica mucho mayor que evitaba los caprichos de la moda y entre otras cosas revelaba la profundidad de su conocimiento del pasado.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En muchos de mis escritos de esa \u00e9poca, incluyendo por supuesto <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/071486417X?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=071486417X&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arquitectura Moderna desde 1900<\/a>, <\/i>mis monograf\u00edas sobre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/0714828718?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=0714828718&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denys Lasdun<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/1935677497?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=1935677497&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balkrishna Doshi<\/a>, mis escritos sobre <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/louis-i-kahn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Louis Kahn<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/alvar-aalto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alvar Aalto<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/tag\/alejandro-de-la-sota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alejandro de la Sota<\/a> y muchos otros, as\u00ed como mis art\u00edculos en revistas sobre cr\u00edtica tales como <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectural-review.com\/?s=william-jr-curtis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architectural Review <\/a>y <a href=\"http:\/\/www.architecturalrecord.com\/search?q=William+J.R.+Curtis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architectural Record<\/a>, yo insist\u00eda en la complejidad y la durabilidad de una tradici\u00f3n moderna en arquitectura en la que los primeros manifiestos estaban siendo rele\u00eddos y transformados por otros seguidores. En los noventa, hubo un cambio a favor de reinterpretar los entonces maestros modernos y su legado. Al final de la primera edici\u00f3n yo insist\u00ed en que es el car\u00e1cter intemporal de la obra de Le Corbusier el que garantizaba su presencia de forma duradera y relevante.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a1Creo que la historia me ha dado la raz\u00f3n!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>El pen\u00faltimo cap\u00edtulo de esta segunda edici\u00f3n \u201cOn Transforming Le Corbusier\u201d aborda, entre otros asuntos, la influencia de Le Corbusier en algunos arquitectos coet\u00e1neos, otros arquitectos modernos y algunos contempor\u00e1neos. Estando profusamente ilustrada con im\u00e1genes y ejemplos de todo ello, no parece en ning\u00fan caso que estas referencias y conexiones no sean claras, en algunos casos incluso obvias. \u00bfA qu\u00e9 cree que se debe esta incre\u00edble influencia de la obra de Le Corbusier que no se da, sin embargo, en ning\u00fan otro arquitecto de su generaci\u00f3n o posterior?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El capitulo 20 \u201cOn Transforming Le Corbusier\u201d supone un a\u00f1adido completamente nuevo a literatura sobre Le Corbusier. En este cap\u00edtulo evito definiciones simplistas de \u201cinfluencia\u201d en favor de m\u00faltiples re-lecturas de ejemplos de Le Corbusier por otros a lo largo de un periodo de un siglo y en muchos lugares del mundo. En varias ocasiones me refiero a Le Corbusier como un espejo y como una lente. Un espejo, porque otros encuentra su identidad como reflejo de sus obras iniciales; una lente, porque a trav\u00e9s de esos mismo prototipos ellos perciben problemas habituales de esos tiempos de nuevas formas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le Corbusier ha tenido un impacto enorme por varias razones. Primero porque se enfrent\u00f3 a muchos de los problemas de la industrializaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de propuestas muy poderosas en sus edificios, proyectos no construidos y escritos. Segundo porque dot\u00f3 a sus manifiestos ejemplares con una fuerza formal sin precedentes. Cada generaci\u00f3n puede volver a la obras de Le Corbusier y encontrar algo inspirador y relevante en ellas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63230\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-63230 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Entrevista-William-J.-R.-Curtis-Marseille-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"William J. Curtis, Marseille<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>En relaci\u00f3n a la pregunta anterior y a su libro <em>Modern Architecture Since 1900<\/em> tambi\u00e9n editado en Phaidon, Jean-Louis Cohen<sup>1<\/sup> le concede la virtud de haber tenido en cuenta la expansi\u00f3n global de la arquitectura moderna e incluir zonas geogr\u00e1ficas como Asia o Am\u00e9rica Latina casi por primera vez en las historias -occidentales en su mayor\u00eda- de arquitectura. \u00bfCree que el hecho de que Le Corbusier trabajara en Asia, Am\u00e9rica y Europa tiene alguna relaci\u00f3n con la la heterogeneidad e influencia posterior de su obra?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">S\u00ed, por supuesto, incluso la primera edici\u00f3n de <i>Arquitectura Moderna desde 1900 <\/i>publicada en 1982 estaba bastante por delante de los dem\u00e1s al tener en cuenta la difusi\u00f3n y extensi\u00f3n de los ideales de la arquitectura moderna en aquello que llamamos pa\u00edses en desarrollo. En los ochenta, pas\u00e9 largos periodos en Indio, el sudeste de Asia, el norte de \u00c1frica y Mexico, investigando sobre arquitectura antigua y moderna. Estaba profundamente interesado en temas de identidad nacional y post colonial y en la fusi\u00f3n de lo general con lo local. Tambi\u00e9n con la interacci\u00f3n entre modelos universales y otros del pasado.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La segunda y tercera ediciones de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/071486417X?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=071486417X&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Arquitectura Moderna desde 1900 <\/i><\/a>(de los a\u00f1os 987 y 1996) se\u00f1alaban palabras clave surgidas en India, \u00c1frica, Am\u00e9rica Latina, etc. tanto en contextos locales como globales. Mi conocimiento de estos lugares y de estas obras era de primera mano y por tanto rechac\u00e9 caer en los habituales clich\u00e9s acerca del llamando tercer mundo. Mis escritos sobre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/1935677497?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=1935677497&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balkrishna Doshi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/2866530349?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=2866530349&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raj Rewal<\/a>, el modernismo indio, Luis Barrag\u00e1n, y las arquitectura emergentes de oriente medio aparecieron en los 80 y se han convertido en seminales. Por eso obviamente cuando me toc\u00f3 volver a Le Corbusier y su impacto mundial, estaba bien preparado. Ideas and Forms\u201d<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>El \u00faltimo cap\u00edtulo del libro \u201cConclusion: Modernism, Nature, Tradition\u201d plantea estos tres t\u00e9rminos como posible resumen de la complej\u00edsima realidad de la obra de Le Corbusier, junto con una cita del mismo en la que subraya la importancia de conocer la historia y encontrar la continuidad en ella, por supuesto abundando en la idea de historia de Hegel y de <i>zeigeist<\/i>. \u00bfPodr\u00eda deducirse de ello que este resumen deja en un segundo plano la fuerte atracci\u00f3n de Le Corbusier por la tecnolog\u00eda (si bien de un primer Le Corbusier como se anota en alg\u00fan momento) y conf\u00eda en una lectura de su obra de madurez para situarlo de nuevo m\u00e1s interesado en la naturaleza, la tradici\u00f3n (o la historia) y la idea de modernidad que de estos conceptos emana?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Del mismo modo que Picasso reinvent\u00f3 el mundo visual de la pintura, Le Corbusier reinvent\u00f3 el mundo de la arquitectura. Fue radical en todos los sentidos: revolucionario pero volviendo a los or\u00edgenes. \u00c9l mismo dijo que el pasado era su \u00fanico verdadero maestro, una declaraci\u00f3n sorprendente para el \u201cpadre\u201d de la arquitectura moderna. Pero por supuesto Le Corbusier penetr\u00f3 en las subestructuras de las diversas tradiciones mundiales y entonces las transform\u00f3 en el lenguaje de su arquitectura moderna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Este proceso de metamorfosis es uno de los temas centrales de mi libro, tambi\u00e9n de todo mi trabajo sobre Le Corbusier comenzando con mis primeros estudios y libros unos cuarenta a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s. Otro tema importante es el de la g\u00e9nesis de las formas. He dedicado un capitulo entero en la nueva parte 4 del libro a \u201cPrincipios y Transformaciones,\u201d pero de hecho el libro entero se ocupa de los procesos de invenci\u00f3n de Le Corbusier y las interacciones entre ideas y formas. Ideas and Forms<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>sup\u00f3n un gran cambio con respecto \u00e1 primeira e non s\u00f3 en canto ao formato de maiores dimensi\u00f3ns, sen\u00f3n sobre todo porque engade a parte IV onde aparecen cinco novos cap\u00edtulos. Sendo esta a principal novidade e xustificaci\u00f3n desta segunda magn\u00edfica edici\u00f3n, xunto coa revisi\u00f3n de argumentos e ideas que foron reforzadas ou o contrario, tal como vostede exp\u00f3n no prefacio, que outras raz\u00f3ns impuls\u00e1ronlle a acometer esta revisi\u00f3n e como animar\u00eda a aqueles que xa co\u00f1eceron a primeira edici\u00f3n a achegarse a esta segunda?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A segunda edici\u00f3n de <em>Le Corbusier: Ideas e Formas<\/em> supuxo unha completa transformaci\u00f3n do libro a todos os niveis: contido, forma, ilustraci\u00f3ns, imaxes e material, bibliogaf\u00eda. Era o meu obxectivo preservar a alma da primeira edici\u00f3n de 1986 expandindo dunha maneira ordenada o corpo principal. En todo momento preocupeime da calidade literaria e de que fose equilibrado. Mencionas os catro novos cap\u00edtulos ao final da secci\u00f3n \u201cPrincipios e\u00a0Transformaciones\u201d. Representan unha reflexi\u00f3n sen precedentes sobre os temas b\u00e1sicos e as ideas central do universo creativo de Le Corbusier. Pero hai numerosas revisi\u00f3ns e ampliaci\u00f3ns ao longo do libro, por exemplo a Vila Savoie en Poissy agora ten un capitulo detallado para ela soa que a mostra moito m\u00e1is en detalle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O rexistro completo e os argumentos sobre os cambios rec\u00f3llense no Prefacio a esta segunda edici\u00f3n e nas Nota Bibliogr\u00e1fica do final onde se explica a re-estruturaci\u00f3n do libro con moito detalle inclu\u00edndo o uso de m\u00e1is de cento trinta das mi\u00f1as propias fotograf\u00edas e incontables reproduci\u00f3ns de alta resoluci\u00f3n de debuxos de Le Corbusier. Con tempo e coa perspectiva de m\u00e1is dun cuarto de s\u00e9culo, era obvio que o libro se merec\u00eda unha nova edici\u00f3n, mesmo a pesar de que a primeira edici\u00f3n moitas veces era referida xa como un cl\u00e1sico. Vostede fala de de un \u201ceclipse temporal\u201d na reputaci\u00f3n de Le Corbusier cando se publicou a primeira edici\u00f3n de <em>Le Corbusier. Ideas and Forms<\/em>, s\u00f3 vinte anos despois da desaparici\u00f3n de Le Corbusier. Por que cre que trinta anos despois daquela primeira edici\u00f3n a s\u00faa figura e as s\u00faas ideas revaloriz\u00e1ronse e asistimos a un novo florecemento de obras, lecturas e re-lecturas da s\u00faa vida e obra?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cando a primeira edici\u00f3n foi publicada en 1986 houbo moitas visi\u00f3ns distorsionadas que circularon en relaci\u00f3n a Le Corbusier. Algunhas delas vi\u00f1an da ret\u00f3rica do post modernismo na que se tend\u00eda a demonizarla e culparlle de todos os \u00a0erros da modernizaci\u00f3n e a urbanizaci\u00f3n (moderna). Foi tratado como un funcionalista sen ra\u00edces. Por iso a primeira edici\u00f3n situaba a Le Corbusier cunha perspectiva hist\u00f3rica moito maior que evitaba os caprichos da moda e entre outras cousas revelaba a profundidade do seu co\u00f1ecemento do pasado.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En moitos dos meus escritos desa \u00e9poca, inclu\u00edndo por suposto <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/071486417X?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=071486417X&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arquitectura Moderna dende 1900<\/a>,<\/i> as mi\u00f1as monograf\u00edas sobre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/0714828718?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=0714828718&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denys Lasdun<\/a>\u00a0e\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/1935677497?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=1935677497&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balkrishna Doshi<\/a>, os meus escritos sobre <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/gl\/tag\/louis-i-kahn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Louis Kahn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/gl\/tag\/alvar-aalto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alvar Aalto<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/gl\/tag\/alejandro-de-la-sota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alejandro de la Sota<\/a> e moitos outros, as\u00ed como os meus artigos en revistas sobre cr\u00edtica tales como <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectural-review.com\/?s=william-jr-curtis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architectural Review<\/a>\u00a0e\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.architecturalrecord.com\/search?q=William+J.R.+Curtis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architectural Record<\/a>, eu insist\u00eda na complexidade e a durabilidad dunha tradici\u00f3n moderna en arquitectura na que os primeiros manifestos estaban a ser relidos e transformados por outros seguidores. Nos noventa, houbo un cambio a favor de reinterpretar os ent\u00f3n mestres modernos e o seu legado. Ao final da primeira edici\u00f3n eu insist\u00edn en que \u00e9 o car\u00e1cter intemporal da obra de Le Corbusier o que garant\u00eda a s\u00faa presenza de forma duradeira e relevante.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Creo que a historia me ha dado a raz\u00f3n!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>O pen\u00faltimo cap\u00edtulo desta segunda edici\u00f3n \u201cOn Transforming Le Corbusier\u201d aborda, entre outros asuntos, a influencia de Le Corbusier nalg\u00fans arquitectos coet\u00e1neos, outros arquitectos modernos e alg\u00fans contempor\u00e1neos. Estando profusamente ilustrada con imaxes e exemplos de todo iso, non parece en ning\u00fan caso que estas referencias e conexi\u00f3ns non sexan claras, nalg\u00fans casos mesmo obvias. A que cre que se debe esta incrible influencia da obra de Le Corbusier que non se d\u00e1, con todo, en ning\u00fan outro arquitecto da s\u00faa xeraci\u00f3n ou posterior?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O capitulo 20 \u201cOn Transforming Le Corbusier\u201d sup\u00f3n un engadido completamente novo a literatura sobre Le Corbusier. Neste cap\u00edtulo evito definici\u00f3ns simplistas de \u201cinfluencia\u201d en favor de m\u00faltiples re-lecturas de exemplos de Le Corbusier por outros ao longo dun per\u00edodo dun s\u00e9culo e en moitos lugares do mundo. En varias ocasi\u00f3ns ref\u00edrome a Le Corbusier como un espello e como unha lente. Un espello, porque outros atopa a s\u00faa identidade como reflexo das s\u00faas obras iniciais; unha lente, porque a trav\u00e9s deses mesmo prototipos eles perciben problemas habituais deses tempos de novas formas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le Corbusier tivo un impacto enorme por varias raz\u00f3ns. Primeiro porque se enfrontou a moitos dos problemas da industrializaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de propostas moi poderosas nos seus edificios, proxectos non constru\u00eddos e escritos. Segundo porque dotou aos seus manifestos exemplares cunha forza formal sen precedentes. Cre que o feito de que Le Corbusier traballase en Asia, Am\u00e9rica e Europa ten algunha relaci\u00f3n coa a heteroxeneidade e influencia posterior da s\u00faa obra?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Si, por suposto, incluso a primeira edici\u00f3n de <em>Arquitectura Moderna dende 1900<\/em> publicada en 1982 estaba bastante por diante dos demais ao ter en conta a difusi\u00f3n e extensi\u00f3n dos ideais da arquitectura moderna naquilo que chamamos pa\u00edses en desenvolvemento. Nos oitenta, pasei longos per\u00edodos en Indio, o sueste de Asia, o norte de \u00c1frica e Mexico, investigando sobre arquitectura antiga e moderna. Estaba profundamente interesado en temas de identidade nacional e post colonial e na fusi\u00f3n do xeral co local. Tam\u00e9n coa interacci\u00f3n entre modelos universais e outros do pasado.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A segunda e terceira edici\u00f3ns de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/071486417X?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=071486417X&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Arquitectura Moderna dende 1900 <\/i><\/a>(dos anos 987 e 1996) sinalaban palabras crave xurdidas en India, \u00c1frica, Am\u00e9rica Latina, etc. tanto en contextos locais como globais. O meu co\u00f1ecemento destes lugares e destas obras era de primeira man e por tanto rexeitei caer nos habituais clich\u00e9s achega do chamando terceiro mundo. Os meus escritos sobre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/1935677497?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=1935677497&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balkrishna Doshi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/2866530349?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=2866530349&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raj Rewal<\/a>, o modernismo indio, Lu\u00eds Barrag\u00e1n, e as arquitectura emerxentes de oriente medio apareceron nos 80 e convert\u00e9ronse en seminales. Por iso obviamente cando me tocou volver a Le Corbusier e o seu impacto mundial, estaba ben preparado. Ideas and Forms\u201d<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>O \u00faltimo cap\u00edtulo do libro \u201cConclusion: Modernism, Nature, Tradition\u201d exp\u00f3n estes tres termos como posible resumo da complej\u00edsima realidade da obra de Lle Corbusier, xunto cunha cita do mesmo na que subli\u00f1a a importancia de co\u00f1ecer a historia e atopar a continuidade nela, por suposto abundando na idea de historia de Hegel e de<em> zeigeist<\/em>. Poder\u00eda deducirse diso que este resumo deixa nun segundo plano a forte atracci\u00f3n de Le Corbusier pola tecnolox\u00eda (a\u00ednda que dun primeiro Le Corbusier como se anota nalg\u00fan momento) e conf\u00eda nunha lectura da s\u00faa obra de madurez para situalo de novo m\u00e1is interesado na natureza, a tradici\u00f3n (ou a historia) e a idea de modernidade que destes conceptos emana?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do mesmo xeito que Picasso reinvent\u00f3 o mundo visual da pintura, Le Corbusier reinvent\u00f3 o mundo da arquitectura. Foi radical en todos os sentidos: revolucionario pero volvendo \u00e1s orixes. El mesmo dixo que o pasado era o seu \u00fanico verdadeiro mestre, unha declaraci\u00f3n sorprendente para o \u201cpai\u201d da arquitectura moderna. Pero por suposto Le Corbusier penetrou nas subestructuras das diversas tradici\u00f3ns mundiais e ent\u00f3n transformounas na linguaxe da s\u00faa arquitectura moderna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Este proceso de metamorfose \u00e9 un dos temas centrais do meu libro, tam\u00e9n de todo o meu traballo sobre Lle Corbusier comezando cos meus primeiros estudos e libros uns corenta anos atr\u00e1s. Outro tema importante \u00e9 o da x\u00e9nese das formas. Dediquei un capitulo enteiro na nova parte 4 do libro a \u201cPrincipios e Transformaci\u00f3ns\u201d, pero de feito o libro enteiro oc\u00fapase dos procesos de invenci\u00f3n de Le Corbusier e as interacci\u00f3ns entre ideas e formas. Ideas and Forms<\/a><\/em> carries major changes on the first one, not only with regard to the size of the book, and its larger dimensions, but mainly because you add part IV within five new chapters in it. Being this the main change and reason for this second great edition, along with the review of ideas and arguments that have been underlined or, if so, the contrary, as you pose in the preface, what other reasons pushed you to tackle this task of reviewing the book and how would you help others who already know the book to look into this new one?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second edition of <em>Le Corbusier: Ideas and Forms<\/em> has involved a complete transformation of the book on all levels, content, form, illustrations, captions, end material, bibliography. It was my aim to preserve the soul of the first edition of 1986 while expanding in a disciplined way the body. At all times I was concerned with literary quality and balance. You mention the four new chapters at the end in the section &#8216;Principles and Transformations&#8217;. These represent an unprecedented reflection upon the basic themes and central ideas of Le Corbusier&#8217;s creative universe. But there are numerous other revisions and amplifications throughout the book, for example the Villa Savoye at Poissy now has a detailed chapter of its own which goes into much greater detail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The full record and argumentation for changes is given in the Preface to the second edition and in the Bibliographical Note at the end which discusses the restructuring of the book in great detail including the use of over one hundred and thirty of my own photographs and countless high resolution reproductions of Le Corbusier&#8217;s original drawings. With time and with the perspective of over a quarter of a century it became obvious that a new edition was merited, even if the first edition was sometimes referred to as a classic. Ideas and Forms\u201d<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>This year (by 2015 when the interview was held) there are many acts and symposiums celebrating Le Corbusier\u00b4s life and work since it is the 50th anniversary of his death. You mention a \u201ctemporal eclipse\u201d in the reputation of Le Corbusier when the first edition of <em>Le Corbusier Ideas and Forms<\/em> was published, only twenty years after Le Corbusier passed away. Why do you think that thirty years after that first edition his figure and ideas have been again valued and we see a blossom of works, readings and new interpretations of his life and work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the first edition was published in 1986 there were many distorted views in circulation concerning Le Corbusier. Some of these stemmed from the rhetoric of post modernism which tended to demonise him and to blame all the ills of disastrous modernisation and urbanisation on him. He was treated as a rootless functionalist. So the first edition placed Le Corbusier in a much longer historical perspective which avoided the vagaries of fashion and among other things revealed the depth of his understanding of the past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In many of my writings in that period, including of course <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/071486417X?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=071486417X&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Modern Architecture Since 1900<\/em><\/a>, my monographs on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/0714828718?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=0714828718&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denys Lasdun<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/1935677497?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=1935677497&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balkrishna Doshi<\/a>, my writings on <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/en\/tag\/louis-i-kahn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Louis Kahn<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/en\/tag\/alvar-aalto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alvar Aalto<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/veredes.es\/blog\/en\/tag\/alejandro-de-la-sota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alejandro de la Sota<\/a> and so many others, as well as my articles in critical journals such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectural-review.com\/?s=william-jr-curtis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architectural Review a<\/a>nd\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.architecturalrecord.com\/search?q=William+J.R.+Curtis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architectural Record<\/a>, I insited on the complexity and durability of a modern tradition in architecture in which primary statements were being re-read and transformed by followers. In the 1990s there was a shift in favour \u00a0a reinterpretation of the so called modern masters and their legacy. At the end of the first edition I insisted that it is the timeless levels in Le Corbusier&#8217;s work which guarantee his lasting presence and relevance.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I think that history has proved me right!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The penultimate chapter of this segued edition \u201cOn Transforming Le Corbusier\u201d deals, among other themes, with Le Corbusier\u2019s influence on some coetaneous architects, some modern architects and some architects of our contemporariness. It is profusely illustrated with images and examples of it so that these references and linkages are pretty clear, even obvious in some particular cases. What are, in your opinion, the reasons of this incredible influence of Le Corbusier\u2019s works that does not occur, however, in any other architect of his generation of later?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chapter 20 &#8216;On Transforming Le Corbusier&#8217; is a completely fresh addition to the literature on Le Corbusier. In this chapter I avoid simplistic definitions of &#8216;influence&#8217; in favour of multiple re-readings of Le Corbusier&#8217;s examples by others over a period of a century and in many parts of the world. At several points I refer to Le Corbusier as a mirror and as a lens. A mirror, because others find their identity by reflecting upon his primary works; a lens, because through these same prototypes they perceive basic problems of the times in new ways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le Corbusier has had this vast impact for several reasons. First of all he addressed many of the problems of industrialisation through powerful propositions in his buildings, unbuilt projects and writings. Second because he endowed his exemplary statements with unprecedented formal strength. Each generation can return to Le Corbusier&#8217;s examples and find something inspiring and relevant in them. Sometimes the same example is interpreted in contratsing ways, because Le Corbusier emnbraced polarities in his syntheses. Curtis, Marseille<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>With regard to the last question and your book <i>Modern Architecture Since 1900<\/i>, also published by Pahidon, Jean-Louis Cohen<sup>1<\/sup> explains how that book takes into account for the first time the global expansion of modern architecture as it includes areas such as Asia or Latin-America almost for the first time in the histories -western mainly though- of architecture. Do you think that the fact that Le Corbusier worked in Asia, America and Europe has some kind of relationship with the heterogeneity and subsequent influence of his work?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yes of course, even the first edition of <em>Modern Architecture Since 1900<\/em> published in 1982 was well ahead of evrybody in taking into account the diffusion and extension of modern arhitectural ideals inthe so called developing world. In the 1980s I spent long periods in India, South East Asia, North Africa and Mexico, investigating architectures ancient and modern. I was deeply interested in issues of national and post colonial identity and in the fusion of the general and the local. Also with the interaction between universalising models and particular pasts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second and third editions of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/071486417X?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=071486417X&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Modern Architecture Since 1900<\/a><\/em> (1987, and 1996) placed key works produced in India, Africa, Latin America etc in both local and global contexts. My knowledge of these places and these works was first hand and I refused to fall into some of the usual clich\u00e9s about the so called third world. My writings on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/1935677497?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=1935677497&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balkrishna Doshi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/gp\/product\/2866530349?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=3626&amp;creativeASIN=2866530349&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=wwwveredeses-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raj Rewal<\/a>, Indian modernism, Luis Barragan, and emerging architectures in the Middle East all appeared in the 1980s and have proved to be seminal. So obviously when revisiting Le Corbusier and his world wide impact, I was well prepared. He was radical in the full sense: revolutionary but returning to roots. He himself stated that the past was his only true master, an astonishing declaration for the &#8216;pope&#8217; of modern architecture. But of course Le Corbusier penetrated the substructures of diverse world tradiotions and then transformed these into the language of his modern architecture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This process of metamorphosis is one of the central themes of my book, indeed of all my work on Le Corbusier starting with my first studies and books over forty years ago. Another basic theme is that of the genesisi of forms. An entire chapter is devoted to this in the new part 4 of the book on &#8216;Principles and Transformations&#8217;, but in fact the whole book has always been concerned with Le Corbusier&#8217;s processes of invention and his interactions of ideas and forms.
