Conviene mantener los o\u00eddos bien abiertos. Algo as\u00ed debi\u00f3 pensar C\u00e9sar Pelli durante su estancia en el estudio de Eero Saarinen a las afueras de Detroit, uno de los despachos de arquitectura m\u00e1s f\u00e9rtiles en el entrenamiento de arquitectos y por el que pasaron figuras tan notables como Robert Venturi o Kevin Roche. Cuenta Pelli que el propio Eliel Saarinen pasaba de vez en cuando por all\u00ed para visitar a Eero, y aunque de las conversaciones entre ambos arquitectos poco se conoce, C\u00e9sar recuerda un consejo que Eliel repet\u00eda con frecuencia, una advertencia velada que parec\u00eda reverberar desde un principio del tiempo y el espacio:<\/p>\n

\u00abPiensa siempre en lo siguiente m\u00e1s grande<\/em>\u00ab1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Hace tiempo que observamos la necesidad de trascender la escala de la arquitectura y pensar m\u00e1s all\u00e1 <\/em>de nuestro propio contexto. Quiz\u00e1 siempre haya sido as\u00ed, quiz\u00e1 en el pasado la necesidad de defensa o recursos b\u00e1sicos requer\u00edan de la inter-conexi\u00f3n entre la arquitectura y un territorio m\u00e1s amplio, entendido en t\u00e9rminos geogr\u00e1ficos, clim\u00e1ticos o ecosist\u00e9micos. En este sentido, interesar\u00edan las arquitecturas que mejoran el espacio p\u00fablico de la ciudad, conectan las infraestructuras existentes o aprovechan lo abundante y conveniente para el medio natural y humano en que se encuentran.<\/p>\n

\n

\u00abPiensa siempre lo siguiente m\u00e1s grande<\/em>\u00ab.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Pero para un arquitecto, lo siguiente m\u00e1s grande puede ser un \u00e1rbol, una plaza, una ciudad, un paisaje o una pen\u00ednsula. Lo siguiente m\u00e1s grande puede ser el silencio, el subsuelo o el horizonte. Siempre habr\u00e1 algo m\u00e1s grande detr\u00e1s de la \u00faltima frontera.<\/p>\n

Conviene aqu\u00ed retomar la pregunta que Le Corbusier se hiciera a s\u00ed mismo casi como una renovaci\u00f3n de sus votos:<\/p>\n

\n

\u00ab\u00bfPara qui\u00e9n hay que construir? Para el hombre<\/em>, no cabe la menor duda\u00bb 2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Pero el hombre en cursiva<\/em> de Le Corbusier representa una figura universal, la suma de todos los hombres: la Humanidad. Desde esta perspectiva, lo siguiente m\u00e1s grande<\/em> bien podr\u00eda representar no un lugar f\u00edsico cada vez de mayor extensi\u00f3n, no una reivindicaci\u00f3n de soluciones locales o regionales m\u00e1s o menos relacionadas con el actual y limitado concepto de lo sostenible. En palabras de Antonio Miranda:<\/p>\n

\u00abLa arquitectura genuina atiende m\u00e1s a la \u00fanica y cierta Civilizaci\u00f3n internacional y menos a las innumerables y autoritarias mitolog\u00edas culturales\u00bb 3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Como si un enorme y \u00fanico extranjero <\/em>fuera el destino com\u00fan de todos los hombres; una biosfera fraternal y civilizadora; un \u00faltimo estadio panhumano. Lo siguiente m\u00e1s grande.<\/p>\n

It suits to support the opened well ears. C\u00e9sar Pelli should have thought something like that during his stay about Eero Saarinen’s study to the suburbs of Detroit, one of the more fertile offices of architecture about the architects’ training and for that there happened figures as notable as Robert Venturi or Kevin Roche. Counts Pelli that the own Eliel Saarinen was spending occasionally there to visit Eero, and though of the conversations between both architects little it is known, Caesar remembers an advice that Eliel was repeating often, a watched warning that seemed to be reflected from a beginning of the time and the space:<\/p>\n

\u00abHe thinks always about the biggest following thing<\/em>\u00ab1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Some time ago that we observe the need to come out the scale of the architecture and to think beyond<\/em> our own context. Probably always it has been like that, probably in the past the need of defense or basic resources they were needing of the interconnection between the architecture and the most wide territory understood with geographical, climatic terms or ecosist\u00e9micos. In this respect, they would interest the architectures that improve the public space of the city, they connect the existing infrastructures or take advantage of the abundant and suitable thing for the natural and human way in which they are.<\/p>\n

\n

\u00abHe thinks always about the biggest following thing<\/em>\u00ab.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But for an architect, the biggest following thing can be a tree, a square, a city, a landscape or a peninsula. The biggest following thing can be the silence, the subsoil or the horizon. Always there will be something bigger behind the last border.<\/p>\n

It suits to take again here the question that Corbusier was doing to himself to yes same almost as a renovation of his votes:<\/p>\n

\u00abFor whom is it necessary to construct? For the man,<\/em> it does not fit the minor doubt\u00bb 2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But the man in cursive<\/em> by Le Corbusier represents a universal figure, the sum of all the men: the Humanity. From this perspective, following more big good<\/em> might represent not a physical place every time of major extension, not a recovery of local or regional solutions more or less related to the current and limited concept of the sustainable thing. In Antonio Miranda’s words:<\/p>\n
