Desde la ciudad de Chicago se convirti\u00f3 en el maestro de varias generaciones de arquitectos estadounidenses, adem\u00e1s de construir numerosos edificios, entre los que destacan los apartamentos de Lake Shore Drive (1948-1951) o el Crown Hall del MIT (1950-1956).<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Entre las obras m\u00e1s emblem\u00e1ticas de Mies Van der Rohe en esta etapa destaca el Seagram Building (1958), un rascacielos de 37 pisos de vidrio y bronce construido en Nueva York junto a su disc\u00edpulo Philip Johnson, y que se convirti\u00f3 en el paradigma del international style, definido por el propio Johnson en un libro de 1932. Sin embargo, unos a\u00f1os antes Mies hab\u00eda realizado su obra maestra estadounidense, la casa Farnsworth en Plano (junto al r\u00edo Fox, Illinois, 1950), un peque\u00f1o refugio delimitado por un muro-cortina de vidrio plano, que se ha convertido en una de las residencias m\u00e1s estudiadas (y tambi\u00e9n m\u00e1s criticadas) de la arquitectura del siglo XX. Se considera uno de los maestros m\u00e1s importantes de la arquitectura moderna, junto con el suizo-franc\u00e9s Le Corbusier y el estadounidense Frank Lloyd Wright. Su huella ha sido especialmente profunda en Estados Unidos y la mayor\u00eda de los rascacielos construidos por todo el mundo siguen parcial o totalmente sus planteamientos compositivos.
