Noche y d\u00eda, sosegadamente, imaginamos casi en silencio. Una ventana seductora e hipn\u00f3tica como una puesta de sol o una lluvia de estrellas. Nadie podr\u00eda imaginar que en realidad, lo que se admira con la emoci\u00f3n propia del corsario ante La Isla del Tesoro, es nada m\u00e1s y nada menos que la poderosa caja fuerte del banco para la <em>Manufacturers Trust Company<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dise\u00f1ado por Gordon Bunshaft y Charles Evan Hughes, ambos integrantes de la firma norteamericana Skidmore, Owings &amp; Merrill, el banco abre sus puertas en 1954 en el cruce entre la Quinta Avenida y la calle 43. Y las abre precisamente a trav\u00e9s de \u00e9sta \u00faltima, reservando el valioso frente de la Avenida como un mirador panor\u00e1mico hacia el interior del edificio<sup><sup>1<\/sup><\/sup>. La estrategia program\u00e1tica apuesta por la exhibici\u00f3n de la caja fuerte de la entidad, usualmente reservada en los proyectos bancarios al b\u00fanker blindado, rec\u00f3ndito y protegido del subsuelo. El retranqueo de la planta principal superior genera un espacio a doble altura visible desde el exterior, una suerte de urna imp\u00fadica y monumental para el largo cortinaje y tel\u00f3n de un <em>escenario<\/em> sobre el que tiene lugar la presentaci\u00f3n de una banca renovada y transparente, una invitaci\u00f3n <em>afilada<\/em> del sistema optimista y herc\u00faleo del pa\u00eds m\u00e1s poderoso del mundo en los 50.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Proyectar es programar<sup><sup>2<\/sup><\/sup>. Interesa aqu\u00ed el sentido de la palabra <em>programar<\/em> como organizaci\u00f3n de acciones e ideas, el proyecto como estrategia de apropiaci\u00f3n del espacio frente a su simple <em>distribuci\u00f3n<\/em>, palabra prohibida para nosotros<sup><sup>3<\/sup><\/sup>. El banco para la <em>Manufacturers Trust Company<\/em> supone la creaci\u00f3n de una nueva tipolog\u00eda desde la inversi\u00f3n del programa, al tiempo que resuelve con suma elegancia la relaci\u00f3n entre la calle y la entidad financiera, ahora devaluada ante los llamativos colores corporativos, el parpadeo de los cajeros autom\u00e1ticos y las ofertas de dep\u00f3sitos, seguros o cuentas n\u00f3mina. La ventana de Bunshaft y Hughes se presenta como un horizonte, una promesa, una de esas fuentes en las que tan solo deslizando una moneda se pudiera alcanzar al menos una de nuestras m\u00e1s rec\u00f3nditas aspiraciones.
