Era jueves, y en la atm\u00f3sfera tranquila de esas \u00faltimas horas del d\u00eda, Venecia parec\u00eda otra ciudad. Cruc\u00e9 el puente, me perd\u00ed por la abigarrada Riva degli Schiavoni y me sent\u00e9 en el borde de un canal a ver pasar la vida, dejando que mis piernas oscilasen a pocos cent\u00edmetros del agua. Mil\u00e1n, Mondadori Electa S.p.A.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pensaba en todas esas cosas cuando me di cuenta de que no estaba s\u00f3lo; a mi lado, recortada contra la luz l\u00edvida de los faroles, distingu\u00ed la figura de un viejo en el que hasta ese momento no hab\u00eda reparado:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\">-Cuando me siento aqu\u00ed- dijo- recuerdo por qu\u00e9 vuelvo a Venecia una y otra vez.<br \/>\n<em>Esta ciudad tiene unas dimensiones que te siguen, y siempre te da la bienvenida<\/em>.<sup>1<\/sup><br \/>\nEscrut\u00e9 su rostro, pero en la penumbra apenas pude distinguir su pelo claro y unos ojos peque\u00f1os. Tras unos segundos, balbuce\u00e9:<br \/>\n-Desde luego, caballero\u2026 \u00a1Y luego est\u00e1n esas fachadas de un rojo obsceno!<br \/>\nAl rubio le divirti\u00f3 mi absurda puntualizaci\u00f3n. Prorrumpi\u00f3 en una carcajada, pas\u00f3 su brazo sobre mi hombro y sugiri\u00f3:<br \/>\n-Conozco una <em>trattoria<\/em> donde preparan el mejor <em>bacal\u00e0 mantec\u00e0 <\/em>de Venecia. Al ponernos en pie descubr\u00ed su colosal estatura, que me hac\u00eda sentir como uno de esos enanos de circo. Mientras camin\u00e1bamos, comenz\u00f3 a hablar sobre algunos viajes de juventud, y en sus recuerdos se mezclaron la noche y los astros:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\">\n&#8211;<em>En Marruecos\u2026la llanura des\u00e9rtica une las aldeas como el mar une las islas <\/em>-explic\u00f3 \u2013 <em>la gente abandona los oasis y los pueblos montada en camellos o burros, guiada s\u00f3lo por las estrellas y el sol<\/em>.<sup>2<\/sup><br \/>\nEso era exactamente lo que me parec\u00eda estar haciendo en esa noche de luna: errar por callejuelas de pavimento argentado, sin rumbo fijo ni faros que nos guiasen.<br \/>\n&#8211;<em>La historia sucesiva<\/em>&#8211; prosigui\u00f3 el anciano-, <em>fue la conversaci\u00f3n con la noche y sus estrellas<\/em>.<sup>3<\/sup><br \/>\n<em>-\u00bfCu\u00e1ndo comenz\u00f3 a verse la noche?<\/em><sup>4<\/sup>&#8211; Respond\u00ed, metaf\u00edsico.<br \/>\nUna nueva carcajada fue la respuesta a mi pregunta ret\u00f3rica:<br \/>\n-Ya hemos llegado- anunci\u00f3-. El viejo golpe\u00f3 con decisi\u00f3n una vetusta puerta de madera, que pronto cedi\u00f3 para dejar a la vista una escalera estrecha, oscura y t\u00e9trica; sin volverse, empez\u00f3 a descender.<br \/>\nNo tuve m\u00e1s remedio que seguirle, y unos segundos despu\u00e9s descubr\u00ed que ni siquiera ese siniestro umbral hab\u00eda prefigurado la escena que iba a contemplar: un tugurio sombr\u00edo, iluminado s\u00f3lo por velas parpadeantes sobre las que flotaba un humo denso de opio y hach\u00eds. A izquierda y derecha, una colecci\u00f3n de personajes extravagantes se arrellanaban l\u00e1nguidos sobre sillones tapizados en seda. Entre ellos, como emergido de las tinieblas, un elegante<em> ma\u00eetre <\/em>avanz\u00f3 hacia nosotros:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\">-La mesa est\u00e1 lista \u2013inform\u00f3-. Don Carlo les espera desde hace tiempo.<br \/>\nNos gui\u00f3 a continuaci\u00f3n hasta una puerta situada en el extremo opuesto de la sala, tras la que descubrimos una estancia extraordinaria: una peque\u00f1a cripta sobre cuyos muros -manchados por la humedad de la laguna que, sin duda, nos rodeaba m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los sillares- descansaba una b\u00f3veda ojival, \u00a1tal vez est\u00e1bamos ante la mazmorra de un antiguo<em> palazzo <\/em>o el \u00faltimo rastro de unas catacumbas!<br \/>\nY all\u00ed, sentado con expresi\u00f3n severa, estaba otro hombre que fij\u00f3 su mirada en nosotros.<br \/>\n-Buenas noches, Profesor -salud\u00f3 el viejo, al tiempo que hac\u00eda una reverencia casi lit\u00fargica-. Le ruego que disculpe nuestro retraso.<br \/>\n&#8211;<em>No hay cultura al norte de los Alpes\u2026<\/em><sup>5<\/sup>&#8211; murmur\u00f3, contrariado, el comensal.<br \/>\nEra un hombre singular. Su barba rala enmarcaba un rostro afilado que, junto con su nariz aguile\u00f1a y su pelo gris peinado hacia atr\u00e1s, le confer\u00eda un aspecto aristocr\u00e1tico y delicado. Ten\u00eda los ojos hundidos, parapetados tras unas gafas redondas y excesivas.<br \/>\nNos sentamos a la mesa y el <em>ma\u00eetre<\/em> sirvi\u00f3 <em>Petrus<\/em> hasta llenar nuestras copas, forjadas con un vidrio azul de Murano. Mil\u00e1n, Mondadori Electa S.p.A.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los movimientos pausados de nuestro anfitri\u00f3n, su cuidadosa manera de posar la copa en la mesa tras cada trago de vino, su mirada se\u00f1oril y vaga, lo hac\u00edan parecer \u2013al menos a mis ojos- la mism\u00edsima reencarnaci\u00f3n del <em>Dogo Foscari.<\/em><sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El viejo, del que ahora s\u00ed pod\u00eda distinguir el rostro, parec\u00eda en cambio un hombre mundano, mucho m\u00e1s prosaico. \u00c9l fue quien comenz\u00f3 la conversaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\">-Profesor, querr\u00eda en primer lugar agradecerle que me permita explicar mi proyecto. Hace tiempo que tengo esa aspiraci\u00f3n\u2026han transcurrido ya cincuenta a\u00f1os desde que lo dibuj\u00e9 por primera vez, y a\u00fan no s\u00e9 si Venecia lo habr\u00e1 aceptado.<br \/>\nEl veneciano sonri\u00f3 con una mezcla de conmiseraci\u00f3n y escepticismo, y el rubio comenz\u00f3 la narraci\u00f3n de ese proyecto que yo estaba ansioso por conocer:<br \/>\n-Ver\u00e1- dijo el viejo-, <em>en Venecia cada \u00e1rbol es precioso\u2026y en la parcela hab\u00eda unos cuantos<\/em>\u2026<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A continuaci\u00f3n, su discurso se volvi\u00f3 confuso. Comenz\u00f3 a hablar de la luz n\u00f3rdica, de un mundo sin sombras; gesticulaba fren\u00e9tico, casi desesperado. Cuando tuve que hacer el proyecto, yo apenas superaba los treinta a\u00f1os. Una interferencia en la naturaleza que difumina los rayos de este sol mediterr\u00e1neo para traer a Venecia la luz del Norte.<br \/>\nEl anfitri\u00f3n y yo hab\u00edamos enmudecido. La claridad de esos bocetos esenciales hab\u00eda hecho innecesaria cualquier palabra, hab\u00edan iluminado un discurso ininteligible.<br \/>\nEn ese instante, rompiendo el silencio, apareci\u00f3 el <em>ma\u00eetre<\/em> con una enorme bandeja de cusc\u00fas.<br \/>\n&#8211; Me he tomado la libertad de cambiar el men\u00fa- se\u00f1al\u00f3 el Profesor-. El <em>bacal\u00e1<\/em> no sienta bien a estas horas. Ya tengo una edad\u2026<br \/>\nEl rubio sonri\u00f3 y mostr\u00f3 su conformidad; parec\u00eda gustarle la idea de experimentar un sabor extra\u00f1o:<br \/>\n-Al fin y al cabo -reflexion\u00f3-, <em>Venecia es la ciudad de los ladrones, la ciudad de los comerciantes. It was the one who began the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>-Teacher, would like to be grateful to him first that permits to explain my project. Some time ago that I have this aspiration \u2026 they have passed already fifty years since I drew it for the first time, and still do not be if Venice will have accepted it.<\/p>\n<p>The Venetian smiled with a mixture of commiseration and skepticism, and the blond one began the story of this project that I was eager to know:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It will see &#8211; said the old man-,<em> in Venice every tree is precious \u2026 and in the plot it had a few<\/em><em><\/em>\u2026<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Later, his speech became confused. It began to speak about the northern light, about a world without shades; it was gesturing frantically, almost desperate. An interference in the nature that blurs the beams of this Mediterranean Sun to bring to Venice the light of the North.<\/p>\n<p>The host and I had silenced. The clarity of these essential sketches had made any word unnecessary, they had illuminated an unintelligible speech.<\/p>\n<p>In this instant, breaking the silence, the <em>ma\u00eetre<\/em> appeared with an enormous tray of couscous.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; I have taken the freedom of changing the menu &#8211; indicated the Teacher-. The <em>bacal\u00e1<\/em> does not sit well at these hours. Already I have an age \u2026<\/p>\n<p>The blond one smiled and showed his conformity; there seemed he to like it the idea of experiencing a strange flavor:<\/p>\n<p>-In the end &#8211; he thought-,<em> Venice is the city of the thieves, the city of the merchants. Tras uns segundos, balbuc\u00edn:<\/p>\n<p>-Dende logo, cabaleiro&#8230; \u00a1E logo est\u00e1n esas fachadas dun vermello obsceno!<\/p>\n<p>Ao louro divertiulle a mi\u00f1a absurda puntualizaci\u00f3n. Prorrumpi\u00f3 nunha gargallada, pasou o seu brazo sobre o meu ombro e suxeriu:<\/p>\n<p>-Co\u00f1ezo unha <em>trattoria<\/em> onde preparan o mellor <em>bacal\u00e0 mantec\u00e0<\/em> de Venecia. Ao po\u00f1ernos de p\u00e9 descubr\u00edn a s\u00faa colosal estatura, que me fac\u00eda sentir como un deses ananos de circo. O vello golpeou con decisi\u00f3n unha vetusta porta de madeira, que pronto cedeu para deixar \u00e1 vista unha escaleira estreita, escura e t\u00e9trica; sen volverse, empezou a descender.<\/p>\n<p>Non tiven m\u00e1is remedio que seguilo, e uns segundos despois descubr\u00edn que nin sequera ese sinistro albor prefigurara a escena que \u00eda contemplar: un tugurio sombr\u00edo, iluminado s\u00f3 por velas parpadeantes sobre as que flotaba un fume denso de opio e hachix. A esquerda e dereita, unha colecci\u00f3n de personaxes extravagantes arrellanaban se l\u00e1nguidos sobre cadeiras de brazos tapizadas en seda. Entre eles, como emerxido das tebras, un elegante<em> ma\u00eetre<\/em> avanzou cara a n\u00f3s:<\/p>\n<p>-A mesa est\u00e1 lista -informou-. Don Carlo esp\u00e9raos dende hai tempo.<\/p>\n<p>Guiounos a continuaci\u00f3n ata unha porta situada no extremo oposto da sala, tras a que descubrimos unha estanza extraordinaria: unha pequena cripta sobre cuxos muros -manchados pola humidade da lagoa que, sen d\u00fabida, nos rodeaba m\u00e1is al\u00e1 dos perpia\u00f1os- descansaba unha b\u00f3veda oxival, talvez estabamos ante o alxube dun antigo<em> palazzo<\/em> ou o \u00faltimo rastro dunhas catacumbas!<\/p>\n<p>E al\u00ed, sentado con expresi\u00f3n severa, estaba outro home que fixou a s\u00faa mirada en n\u00f3s.<\/p>\n<p>-Boas noites, Profesor -saudou o vello, ao tempo que fac\u00eda unha reverencia case lit\u00farxica-. Pr\u00e9golle que desculpe o noso atraso.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<em>Non hai cultura ao norte dos Alpes<\/em>\u2026<sup>5<\/sup>&#8211; murmurou, contrariado, o comensal.<\/p>\n<p>Era un home singular. A s\u00faa barba rala enmarcaba un rostro afiado que, xunto co seu nariz aquilino e o seu pelo gris peiteado cara a atr\u00e1s, lle confer\u00eda un aspecto aristocr\u00e1tico e delicado. Ti\u00f1a os ollos afundidos, parapetados tras uns lentes redondos e excesivos.<\/p>\n<p>Sent\u00e1monos \u00e1 mesa e o <em>ma\u00eetre<\/em> serviu <em>Petrus<\/em> ata encher as nosas copas, forxadas cun vidro azul de Murano. Comezou a falar da luz n\u00f3rdica, dun mundo sen sombras; xesticulaba fren\u00e9tico, case desesperado.
