El resto de su vida seguir\u00eda pasando los veranos con su familia en su pa\u00eds natal, y, como tantos arquitectos n\u00f3rdicos de la \u00e9poca, visitar\u00eda los pa\u00edses del Mediterr\u00e1neo aprendiendo las lecciones de arquitectura <em>in situ<\/em>, no por los libros.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nadie discutir\u00eda la irreverente modernidad de su breve carrera profesional, dram\u00e1ticamente cercenada por un tumor cerebral en 1961. Y, sin embargo, en esos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s fervientes de su oficina, no ocult\u00f3 su inter\u00e9s por la Historia de la Arquitectura en general y de la medieval en particular:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cDurante la oscura Edad Media surgi\u00f3 una nueva arquitectura liberada de las proporciones can\u00f3nicas. El Rom\u00e1nico y el G\u00f3tico, la m\u00e1s bella arquitectura producida por el hombre occidental, fue el resultado\u201d.<\/em><sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En 1947 inici\u00f3 su singladura en solitario, deslig\u00e1ndose as\u00ed del estudio de su padre a cuya sombra hab\u00eda aprendido la profesi\u00f3n. En ese a\u00f1o se present\u00f3 de forma independiente al concurso para el dise\u00f1o del <em>Jefferson National Expansion Memorial<\/em> de San Luis. Dise\u00f1\u00f3 una soluci\u00f3n muy depurada al concentrar todo el inter\u00e9s de su proyecto en un gran arco a modo de icono urbano de escala monumental, aut\u00e9ntica \u201cpuerta\u201d al territorio occidental estadounidense. El Mississippi es frontera natural entre los estados de Illinois y Missouri, y cruzar su cauce hacia San Luis es un acontecimiento que celebran sus numerosos puentes desde el siglo XIX, as\u00ed que recurrir a la forma del arco favorec\u00eda la empat\u00eda con las formas de su paisaje urbano m\u00e1s caracter\u00edstico, adem\u00e1s de recuperar la semi\u00f3tica del \u201carco de triunfo\u201d romano para el panorama contempor\u00e1neo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En la primera fase del concurso, el trazado del arco de San Luis fue dirigido por la precisi\u00f3n matem\u00e1tica, en forma de par\u00e1bola exacta. Pero en la segunda fase, Saarinen alter\u00f3 el dise\u00f1o para ajustarlo a la \u201cprecisi\u00f3n del ojo\u201d (seg\u00fan sus propias palabras), adoptando la forma de una catenaria invertida, es decir, una curva de origen m\u00e1s \u201cnatural\u201d pues es funci\u00f3n del peso propio del cable tendido entre dos extremos sujetos; y adem\u00e1s estructuralmente es la m\u00e1s simple, al trabajar exclusivamente a compresi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En dos de sus estudios geom\u00e9tricos del proyecto realizados en 1959 parece perseguir la curva perfecta a trav\u00e9s de los c\u00e1nones cl\u00e1sicos del hombre de Vitruvio dibujado por Leonardo da Vinci o del \u201cmodulor\u201d contempor\u00e1neo de Le Corbusier. Traz\u00f3 numerosas l\u00edneas inscritas en un cuadrado (pues no en vano su <em>Gateway Arch<\/em> era tan alto como ancho), y lo hizo para intentar justificar la procedencia de la forma divina al apoyarse en las reglas de la secci\u00f3n \u00e1urea que gobierna las proporciones de sendos modelos. Circunferencias, diagonales, paralelas y perpendiculares son los restos de una batalla ganada finalmente por la intuici\u00f3n, pues \u00e9sta es<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c<em>la \u00fanica gu\u00eda certera que tenemos para encontrar las proporciones en la actualidad. No dejemos que existan directrices artificiosas sobre nuestra intuici\u00f3n. Nuestra intuici\u00f3n es un instrumento muy refinado, comparable a uno de esos s\u00faper cerebros mec\u00e1nicos de la IBM repletos de informaci\u00f3n correcta. (\u2026) Si les hici\u00e9ramos caso a los defensores de las reglas de las proporciones supongo que rechazar\u00edamos cualquier respuesta que no fuera con n\u00fameros redondos<\/em>\u201d.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saarinen destac\u00f3 desde ni\u00f1o como dibujante. Su ojo fue educado para mirar. Y su arquitectura, esa que hoy admiramos, refleja en sus formas la alegr\u00eda de so\u00f1ar, de explorar nuevas posibilidades pl\u00e1sticas para la arquitectura. En cada nuevo proyecto se asom\u00f3 al precipicio que otros nunca advirtieron o que simplemente no quisieron ver. Y as\u00ed hoy tenemos ese <em>Gateway Arch<\/em> en San Luis, verdadero icono de la modernidad y descomunal <em>objet trouv\u00e9<\/em> solo al alcance de los osados, de los que vencen al temor a equivocarse. L\u00e1stima que \u00e9l nunca pudiera encontr\u00e1rselo (la obra concluy\u00f3 en 1965), aunque s\u00ed pudo jugar con sus <em>mock-ups<\/em> como lo hac\u00eda de ni\u00f1o al colarse bajo los tableros de dibujo del estudio de su padre.
