La fiesta que ol\u00eda a napalm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All\u00ed estaba mi padre, mir\u00e1ndome con aprobaci\u00f3n. Su \u00fanico hijo hab\u00eda decidido estudiar arquitectura y eso le tranquilizaba. Se hab\u00edan acabado para m\u00ed esas tardes en las que dilataba las horas entre libros, revistas y tebeos. Por fin hab\u00eda decidido aplicar el sentido com\u00fan y escuchar sus consejos. Era un buen estudiante y, como tal, deb\u00eda escoger una carrera que me ofreciese un futuro: ser\u00eda arquitecto.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recuerdo mi primer d\u00eda en la facultad. Vi ese edificio, esa masa ingente de hormig\u00f3n gris como aquella ma\u00f1ana de octubre, y pens\u00e9 que nadie pod\u00eda ser feliz all\u00ed. Pero pronto descubr\u00ed que me equivocaba; hab\u00eda llegado justo a tiempo para unirme a la fiesta que estaban celebrando. Era 1998 y nadie se preguntaba cu\u00e1nto pod\u00eda durar la juerga. Tal vez fuese la actitud correcta porque, en realidad, las fiestas siempre acaban antes de que uno se d\u00e9 cuenta, o antes al menos de que lo acepte. Por eso son fiestas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Formarse como arquitecto en medio de ese paroxismo hedonista deja secuelas. En los primeros a\u00f1os del nuevo siglo, nada era comparable a estudiar arquitectura en Espa\u00f1a, el pa\u00eds del milagro econ\u00f3mico. Los oligarcas se fotografiaban con <em>sus<\/em> arquitectos, que viajaban en aviones privados para desplazarse a la otra punta del mundo al d\u00eda siguiente. Rem hac\u00eda sonar la flauta y los prohombres le segu\u00edan sin cuestionarse siquiera ad\u00f3nde estaban siendo conducidos. No era muy diferente la vida de Zaha, la de Jacques y Pierre, la de Rafa, la de Juan o la de aquellos chicos holandeses. Todos quer\u00edamos ser como ellos, aunque nos jod\u00eda reconocerlo. El <em>arquitecto estrella <\/em>era un cham\u00e1n en los \u00faltimos estertores del neoliberalismo feroz; era el Heisenberg capaz de cocinar ese excelso cristal azul que todos, pol\u00edticos y ciudadanos, codiciaban.<\/p>\n <span style=\"color: #999999;\">El laboratorio m\u00f3vil de Heisenberg. Breaking Bad (V.Gilligan, 2008)<\/span>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La figura del arquitecto se agrandaba. Al fin y al cabo, \u00bfqui\u00e9n pod\u00eda prescindir de esas <em>piezas de autor<\/em>? Bilbao no pod\u00eda, Valencia no pod\u00eda. Madrid, por supuesto, no pod\u00eda; ni Barcelona, Londres o Berl\u00edn. Ni siquiera Nueva York. Como bien de consumo, la arquitectura cay\u00f3 en la trampa de exaltar la juventud como valor absoluto para explotar un mercado virgen. Echen un vistazo a las publicaciones de la \u00e9poca: <em>Sangre fresca, Pr\u00f3xima generaci\u00f3n, La arquitectura que viene<\/em>. Pasajes, Arquitectura Viva, El Croquis. Pocos pensaron entonces que tal vez esto iba demasiado deprisa, que algunos licores exigen una tediosa destilaci\u00f3n. El arquitecto, convertido en estrella del <em>rock<\/em>, so\u00f1aba con destronar a Jagger. Pod\u00eda caminar por las calles como <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v90KPJ6n4Ew\">Alex y sus <em>drugos<\/em><\/a>, como esos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JxW1yBGkmb8\">Reservoir Dogs<\/a> que, impecablemente trajeados, discuten banalidades a la hora del desayuno porque saben que todo est\u00e1 bajo control. Pero alguien debi\u00f3 haber avisado: siempre puede fallar algo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El <em>arquitecto estrella<\/em> hab\u00eda pactado con Mefist\u00f3feles para conquistar a Gretchen. Era evidente, por tanto, que llegar\u00eda <em>ese<\/em> d\u00eda en que su alma habr\u00eda de rendir cuentas<sup><sup>1<\/sup><\/sup>. Pero es dif\u00edcil pararse a pensar en medio de una tempestad o de una gran batalla. La raz\u00f3n se nubla, la mente embotada s\u00f3lo piensa en ir un paso m\u00e1s all\u00e1. Los arquitectos parec\u00edan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Jts9suWIDlU\">adorar el olor del napalm por la ma\u00f1ana<\/a>, y las colinas arrasadas parec\u00edan desprender un inefable aroma a victoria. Pero, como Kilgore hab\u00eda predicho, un d\u00eda esa guerra acab\u00f3. Las cosas cambiaron y los pr\u00f3ceres de la arquitectura tuvieron que cambiar su discurso. Ante el manifiesto colapso de un sistema econ\u00f3mico que hab\u00eda prometido un crecimiento exponencial e infinito, los pol\u00edticos -hasta entonces principales inversores, socios y amigos de los <em>arquitectos estrella<\/em>&#8211; renegaron de ellos. Era necesario huir de la ostentaci\u00f3n, el mundo deb\u00eda ser austero y sostenible. Vestir de Armani resultaba obsceno.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fue entonces cuando acab\u00e9 la carrera. Me hab\u00eda convertido en arquitecto, pero la vida no hab\u00eda cambiado mucho. Cierto es que miraba de manera distinta los edificios que me rodeaban, anta\u00f1o simplemente un mudo decorado que acompa\u00f1aba mis pasos, y que hab\u00eda abandonado mis dibujos de personas para realizar <em>apuntes a mano alzada<\/em> de casas, villas o ciudades. Sin embargo, nada parec\u00eda se\u00f1alarme como un elegido, como el hombre destinado a alterar el devenir de la metr\u00f3polis contempor\u00e1nea. Nada en m\u00ed recordaba a la vida de esos demiurgos de Entreguerras que me hab\u00edan ensa\u00f1ado a idolatrar. Fui, por as\u00ed decirlo, eyectado a un mundo extra\u00f1o que nada ten\u00eda que ver con el escenario que me hab\u00edan pintado en la facultad. Estaba, adem\u00e1s, confuso ante la mutaci\u00f3n de piel que hab\u00eda experimentado el discurso de aquellas figuras que cinco a\u00f1os antes se\u00f1alaban el camino con gesto firme. Ya no hab\u00eda partido de <em>rookies<\/em> en el <em>all star<\/em>, los arquitectos j\u00f3venes ya no \u00e9ramos m\u00e1s populares que los vocalistas de grupos alternativos. Hubo tiempo para la ira; record\u00e9 el <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LYS4SkKzhrc\">memorable delirio de Aguirre en boca de Kinski<\/a> y promet\u00ed ser, como \u00e9l, la c\u00f3lera de Dios. Pens\u00e9 en marcharme, en dar la raz\u00f3n al gran Castelao cuando aseguraba que <em>el gallego no protesta, emigra<\/em>. Luego me tranquilic\u00e9 y pens\u00e9 que faltaba mucho por hacer, que deb\u00eda existir alguna alternativa. Siempre me ha gustado caminar hacia casa solo y a paso lento despu\u00e9s de la fiesta, porque de noche el recuerdo disfraza de gesta la an\u00e9cdota.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Segundo tiempo. Dies irae<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Muchos lloraron. Al pie de un \u00e1rbol, recordaron tiempos pasados de victorias aplastantes, de capitales conquistadas y vastos imperios. No fue mi caso. Es absurdo llorar por para\u00edsos que<em> nunca fueron m\u00edos<\/em><sup><sup>2<\/sup><\/sup>. No espero ser se\u00f1alado como uno de los justos en el <em>Dies Irae<\/em>, en ese postrero D\u00eda de la Ira. Como en la historia de tantas naciones, ha sido necesario encontrar un enemigo que sirviese de argamasa y resultase, al mismo tiempo, sustrato f\u00e9rtil para un credo com\u00fan. Ese enemigo ha sido una nueva ley que altera los l\u00edmites de nuestras competencias. Ahora estamos unidos: todos a una, aquellos que defendieron durante a\u00f1os los valores inherentes a esta disciplina y los serviles que medraron gracias a la connivencia de pol\u00edticos prevaricadores. Resulta parad\u00f3jico, y tal vez artificial, buscar un discurso homog\u00e9neo y defender la buena praxis a la vista de las cicatrices que los a\u00f1os de fiesta han dejado en nuestro paisaje. Por otro lado, me pregunto si la lucha (necesaria, sin duda) contra este nuevo marco legal no esconde bajo su alfombra una realidad m\u00e1s compleja y dolorosa; me pregunto si no es un problema mayor la reforma del sistema universitario, o el hecho de que el n\u00famero de arquitectos titulados anualmente sea sensiblemente mayor que el demandado por la sociedad en este momento; me pregunto si no ser\u00e1 este el tiro de gracia a una universidad p\u00fablica moribunda, infectada de nepotismo, abandonada a los intereses de sus caciques e incapaz de competir en productividad, lastrada por la cuestionable efectividad de su sistema de becas. Me reconforta, no obstante, ver c\u00f3mo los colegios se enrolan en esta la cruzada, ya que en los a\u00f1os de opulencia renunciaron a fijar unas condiciones \u00f3ptimas para los contratos profesionales de reci\u00e9n titulados (\u00bfnunca se han preguntado por qu\u00e9 esa abismal diferencia entre el n\u00famero de arquitectos licenciados y el de colegiados?) y -en algunos casos- ampararon concursos que vulneraban la m\u00e1s elemental integridad de esta profesi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El domingo pasado, un d\u00eda de sol, fui a comer con mi padre. Hac\u00eda tiempo que no nos ve\u00edamos. Hablamos de c\u00f3mo hab\u00eda sido el acto de lectura de mi tesis, al que \u00e9l prefiri\u00f3 no asistir. Me pregunt\u00f3 por mi trabajo, por mis expectativas para el futuro inmediato; me pregunt\u00f3 qu\u00e9 pensaba hacer ahora que, por primera vez en tres d\u00e9cadas, no ten\u00eda posibilidad de continuar mi formaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica. Lo mir\u00e9 y, tras un silencio extra\u00f1o, di un trago largo a mi cerveza. Me observ\u00f3 serio durante un momento, me dio la enhorabuena por el doctorado y, antes de cambiar de tema, me dijo que ten\u00eda un regalo para m\u00ed. Pero, como Kilgore hab\u00eda predicho, un d\u00eda esa guerra acabou. As cousas cambiaron e os pr\u00f3ceres da arquitectura tiveron que cambiar o seu discurso. Ante o manifesto colapso dun sistema econ\u00f3mico que prometera un crecemento exponencial e infinito, os pol\u00edticos -ata ent\u00f3n principais inversores, socios e amigos dos arquitectos estrela- renegaron deles. Era necesario fuxir da ostentaci\u00f3n, o mundo deb\u00eda ser austero e sostenible. Vestir de Armani resultaba obsceno.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foi ent\u00f3n cando acabei a carreira. Converteume en arquitecto, pero a vida non cambiara moito. Certo \u00e9 que miraba de xeito distinto os edificios que me rodeaban, outrora simplemente un mudo decorado que acompa\u00f1aba os meus pasos, e que abandonara os meus debuxos de persoas para realizar<em> apuntes a man alzada<\/em> de casas, vilas ou cidades. Con todo, nada parec\u00eda sinalarme como un elixido, como o home destinado a alterar o devir da metr\u00f3polis contempor\u00e1nea. Nada en min recordaba \u00e1 vida deses demiurgos de Entreguerras que me ensinaran a idolatrar. Fun, por as\u00ed dicilo, eyectado a un mundo estra\u00f1o que nada ti\u00f1a que ver co escenario que me pintaron na facultade. Estaba, ademais, confuso ante a mutaci\u00f3n de pel que experimentara o discurso daquelas figuras que cinco anos antes sinalaban o cami\u00f1o con xesto firme. Pensei en marcharme, en dar a raz\u00f3n ao gran Castelao cando aseguraba que o<em> galego non protesta, emigra<\/em>. Logo tranquiliceime e pensei que faltaba moito por facer, que deb\u00eda existir algunha alternativa. Agora estamos unidos: todos a un tempo, aqueles que defenderon durante anos os valores inherentes a esta disciplina e os serviles que medraron grazas \u00e1 connivencia de pol\u00edticos prevaricadores. Resulta paradoxal, e talvez artificial, buscar un discurso homox\u00e9neo e defender a boa praxe \u00e1 vista das cicatrices que os anos de festa deixaron na nosa paisaxe. Doutra banda, preg\u00fantome si a loita (necesaria, sen d\u00fabida) contra este novo marco legal non esconde baixo a s\u00faa alfombra unha realidade m\u00e1is complexa e dolorosa; preg\u00fantome si non \u00e9 un problema maior a reforma do sistema universitario, ou o feito de que o n\u00famero de arquitectos titulados anualmente sexa sensiblemente maior que o demandado pola sociedade neste momento; preg\u00fantome si non ser\u00e1 leste o tiro de graza a unha universidade p\u00fablica moribunda, infectada de nepotismo, abandonada aos intereses dos seus caciques e incapaz de competir en productividade, lastrada pola cuestionable efectividade do seu sistema de becas. Reconf\u00f3rtame, non obstante, ver como os colexios se enrolan nesta a cruzada, xa que nos anos de opulencia renunciaron a fixar unhas condici\u00f3ns \u00f3ptimas para os contratos profesionais de rec\u00e9ns titulados (\u00bfnunca se preguntaron por que esa abismal diferenza entre o n\u00famero de arquitectos licenciados e o de colexiados?) e -nalg\u00fans casos- ampararon concursos que vulneraban a m\u00e1is elemental integridade desta profesi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O domingo pasado, un d\u00eda de sol, fun comer co meu pai. Fac\u00eda tempo que non nos viamos. Falamos de como fora o acto de lectura da mi\u00f1a tese, ao que el preferiu non asistir. Preguntoume polo meu traballo, polas mi\u00f1as expectativas para o futuro inmediato; preguntoume que pensaba facer agora que, por primeira vez en tres d\u00e9cadas, non ti\u00f1a posibilidade de continuar a mi\u00f1a formaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica. Maybe it was the correct attitude because, actually, the holidays always finish before one realizes, or before at least of that accepts it. Because of it they are holidays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To be formed as architect in the middle of this hedonistic paroxysm leaves sequels. In the first years of the new century, nothing was comparable to studying architecture in Spain, the country of the economic miracle. The oligarches were photographing each other with <em>his<\/em> architects, who were travelling in planes deprived to move to another top of the world the following day.\u00a0Rem was making sound the flute and the masters were following him without questioning at least ad\u00f3nde were being led. There was not very different Zaha&#8217;s life, that of Jacques and Pierre, that of Rafa, that of Juan or that of those Dutch boys. We all wanted to be like they, though it was pestering us to recognize it. Few ones thought then that maybe this was going too fast, that some liquors demand a tedious distillation. The architect turned into star of the <em>rock star<\/em>, was dreaming of overthrowing Jagger. It could walk along the streets as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v90KPJ6n4Ew\">Alex and his <em>droogos<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0as this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JxW1yBGkmb8\">Reservoir Dogs<\/a> that, impeccably dressed, discuss banalities at the moment of the breakfast because they know that everything is under control. But someone have should to have warned: always it can trump something.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <em>major architect<\/em> had compromised with Mephistopheles to conquer Gretchen. It was evident, therefore, that there would come this day in which his soul should produce accounts<sup><sup>1<\/sup><\/sup>.\u00a0But it is difficult to stop to think in the middle of a tempest or a great battle. The reason clouds over, the mind dulled only thinks of going a step beyond.\u00a0The architects seemed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Jts9suWIDlU\">to adore the smell of the napalm in the morning<\/a>, and the satiny hills seemed to detach an indescribable aroma to victory.\u00a0But, since Kilgore had predicted, one day this war finished. The things changed and the illustrious ones of the architecture had to change his speech. Before the manifest collapse of an economic system that had promised an exponential and infinite growth, the politicians &#8211; till then principal investors at the time, partners and friends of the <em>major architects<\/em> &#8211; renounced them. It was necessary to flee of the ostentation, the world had to be austere and sustainable. To dress of Armani was turning out to be obscene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was at the time when I ended the career. I had turned into architect, but the life had not changed very much.
