Con un trabajo fotogr\u00e1fico austero y directo pero lleno de matices y dotado de una fuerte potencialidad expresiva, Robert Adams (Orange, New Jersey, 1937) se ha convertido en uno de los cronistas m\u00e1s l\u00facidos de los profundos cambios que ha experimentado el paisaje del oeste norteamericano en las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas. Sus im\u00e1genes en blanco y negro de carreteras que se pierden en el horizonte, bosques deforestados o complejos residenciales y comerciales por los que deambulan figuras solitarias, documentan y denuncian el enorme impacto (tanto desde un punto de vista medioambiental como social y cultural) que el desarrollo urban\u00edstico y la explotaci\u00f3n intensiva de los recursos naturales ha tenido en este territorio.<\/p>\n

Adams retrata este proceso de transformaci\u00f3n de forma as\u00e9ptica y distante, evitando el subrayado dram\u00e1tico, el juicio expl\u00edcito. Y a partir de esa mirada aparentemente neutra plantea una reflexi\u00f3n cr\u00edtica en torno a cuestiones como la relaci\u00f3n, siempre conflictiva, entre civilizaci\u00f3n y naturaleza o la p\u00e9rdida del v\u00ednculo con el territorio en las sociedades contempor\u00e1neas. Su obra, no obstante, contiene una cierta dimensi\u00f3n esperanzadora: en ella hay una incesante b\u00fasqueda de la belleza y el equilibrio, un esfuerzo por encontrar, incluso en los paisajes m\u00e1s alterados, destellos de vida, se\u00f1ales de que la (re)conciliaci\u00f3n entre el ser humano y su entorno sigue siendo posible.<\/p>\n

De las series sobre parajes rurales y enclaves monumentales de Colorado que realiz\u00f3 a mediados de los sesenta (The Plains, Late Hispanic Settlement, Ludlow<\/em>) a los primeros trabajos en los que denunci\u00f3 los efectos perversos de la expansi\u00f3n urban\u00edstica sobre el territorio del oeste norteamericano (Eden, The New West, What We Bought<\/em>); de sus evocadoras im\u00e1genes de \u00e1reas residenciales perif\u00e9ricas al anochecer (Summer Nights<\/em>) o de majestuosos espacios naturales marcados por la intervenci\u00f3n humana (From the Missouri West<\/em>) a los proyectos en los que expone de forma m\u00e1s cruda las consecuencias de la contaminaci\u00f3n y la deforestaci\u00f3n (Los Angeles Spring, Our Parents, Our Children, Turning Back<\/em>) o en los que ofrece una visi\u00f3n m\u00e1s l\u00edrica del paisaje (The Pawnee National Grassland, Along Some Rivers, The Pacific, Pine Valley, Alder Leaves, Sea Stories, This Day<\/em>).<\/p>\n

With a photographic style that is austere and direct yet also full of nuance and expressive potential, Robert Adams (Orange, New Jersey, 1937) has been widely regarded as one of the most lucid chroniclers of the profound changes taking place in the landscape of the American West in recent decades. His black-and-white images of roads lost in the horizon, of deforested woods or residential and shopping complexes in which solitary figures wander, describe and lament the enormous impact (in both environmental and in social and cultural terms) that urban development and the over-exploitation of natural resources have had on the territory.<\/p>\n

Adams portrays this transformation in an aseptic and distant manner, avoiding dramatic emphasis or explicit judgements. With this seemingly neutral gaze, he engages in a critical reflection on questions such as the always troubled relationship between civilization and nature, or the loss of connection with the land in contemporary societies. However, his work also contains a certain dimension of hope: in it there is an unceasing search for beauty and balance, an effort to find, even in the most heavily-altered landscapes, flashes of life, signs that a (re)conciliation between humanity and its surroundings is still possible.<\/p>\n

<\/em>The Place We Live<\/em>, the first retrospective exhibition on Robert Adams to be shown to Spain, leads viewers through the main projects undertaken by this photographer (projects for the most part initially conceived as books). The works on display range from the series on some of Colorado’s rural settings and monuments that he made in the mid sixties (The Plains, Late Hispanic Settlement, Ludlow<\/em>) to the first works in which he criticized the perverse effects of urban expansion in the American West (Eden, The New West, What We Bought<\/em>); from his evocative images of outlying residential areas at dusk (Summer Nights<\/em>) or of majestic natural sites marked by human intervention (From the Missouri West<\/em>) to the projects in which he harshly depicts the consequences of pollution and deforestation (Los Angeles Spring, Our Parents, Our Children, Turning Back<\/em>) or in which he offers a more lyrical vision of the landscape (The Pawnee National Grassland, Along Some Rivers, The Pacific, Pine Valley, Alder Leaves, Sea Stories, This Day<\/em>).<\/p>\n
