Son los primeros cuarenta a\u00f1os de la ciudad. Los que van del asentamiento holand\u00e9s original, en 1625, a la conquista por los ingleses, en 1664. Entonces se llamaba Nueva \u00c1msterdam y ocupaba la punta sur de Manhattan, donde se alzan hoy los rascacielos de Wall Street. Su recuerdo no suele ocupar m\u00e1s que un par de l\u00edneas en los manuales, aunque aquella comunidad forj\u00f3 el car\u00e1cter de la ciudad. Compuesta por \u00abempresarios, exploradores, piratas, prostitutas y p\u00edcaros\u00bb de toda Europa, fund\u00f3 la esencia comercial y multi\u00e9tnica de la urbe. Toda una anomal\u00eda en el origen de Estados Unidos, tal y como resurge en el ensayo <em>Manhattan, la historia secreta de Nueva York<\/em> (Duomo), del historiador Russell Shorto, que rescata un pasado casi ignorado durante tres siglos.
