Fermín G. Blanco, sistema Lupo

Lupo is a didactic tool developed by a group of professionals been interested in the education. The equipment that forms System Lupo is heterogeneous and always it is opened for new collaborations.

Lupo arises tied to a patent designed by the architect Fermin Blanco, is a system of construction based on a set of seven proportional pieces between if that allow infinity of apparels. Depending on the material and the scale, lupo adopts a few characteristics or others.

Which has been your formation and your professional path before System Lupo?

Always I have been interested in the construction, when you finish the career of architecture, you have an emptiness in the stomach, a sensation of dizziness to face to a project of “truth”. I at least this way have experienced it and speaking with other companions and now with the pupils of end of career who finish his studies me trasmiten the same sensation.

My first professional experience was excellent, because I had the possibility of being guided by a teacher. I entered Manolo Gallego’s study without having suffered an alone work and was sharing hours and working hours with a professional who me was transmitting all or at least It departs from his doubts … for my age a surprising experience, I was full of doubts but how could that man with his path and his knowledge have so many doubts before a project? I accompanied Manolo for three unforgettable years, learning to doubt in a formative constant phase that today we would be call Master, I suppose.

To the time I realized my courses of the third cycle and initiated my doctoral thesis, during these years I represented in person to the defense of the chair of Manolo where topics treated each other, some of which I even was not managing to deal, I believe that even I lack a few hundreds of books for reading to be able to interpret some theoretical part of this document. During these years I learned very much on the material, the process, the construction …, all these things that now I try to explain in my classes of construction. But especially it helped me to understand that the formation and the doubt is something that will accompany us along all our personal and professional path. And also and not less importantly that there exist many ways of developing the profession but only some of them are ethical.

In the year 2006 I opened the doors of my own professional study, surrounded myself with good and professional people and began to do technical assistances to different organisms and companies, organized exhibitions, finished my doctoral thesis and began to give conferences and courses in different universities, museums and professional colleges. Between averages I patented the system Lupo as didactic tool to do what really I like that it is to learn teaching.

Did you appear in some moment, present, past or future, to look for work abroad?

Since I me am refiriendo to moments concatenated in the time where really we were not marking ours aims but we were doing and doing … And a few projects were taking others to us. Really only we were doing professional incursions abroad when the projects were needing it but not thinking of establishing the company it was.

I believe that great part of my generation prospered on way with the visits abroad across the scholarships of study or exchange. Great part of my companions they were opening new destinations in a moment in which from Europe the exchange was promoted. I think that this part of the pro-European politics was a success. In my case it led me to being one year in Lisbon and also to taking part in educational projects with Italian entities. At present the panoramic vision of a world without borders to others of it looks like an advertisement is a reality so evident that nobody can appear a future without looking on the outside. We at present have a series of didactic projects in collaboration with different entities and foreign companies as Arup Londres, American Hardwood Export Council, or the Museum Federico Silva of Mexico.

What did you lead to starting this project?

As someone of my projects, certainly those that more fondness I have, I did it without order happened. From a few works that we were developing for museums, principally you confer and exhibitions.

They entrusted us infantile workshops that were explaining the topics that were treating each other in the exhibitions, in this moment they were topics of postesado, construction of bridges and big structures. We start by doing these workshops with boxes of shellfish and from there we saw that we needed a material of great format as the boxes but that it was proportional in three dimensions, as a block of construction. We define a few geometries and basic pieces and later we make of the same material (polystyrene PS) different versions until comes the one that more it us was satisfying for qualities, possibilities and also the way of joining the pieces.

Since we imagine that every ésto would be invented, we decide to develop a brand to protect ourselves, for fear that a multinational juguetera could denounce us for using an already existing patent. Without I engage the process it determined that the idea is original and finally the own Patent of the system was granted lupo. (ES 200902060)

Since then the first Super lupo has given place to different products changing the material and the scale but supporting the experimental and didactic character. Timber lupo, Lupo Plot, Lupo DIY, Lupo Digital … The information about every version can turn in the web of the system.

The last one of them Lupo Plot, includes the color, and a manufacture across printers 3D and bioplastics of last generation type PLA inside this intention of working with all kinds of materials and technologies. Whenever we generate a product we assume small variations in the way of fitting the pieces or in the singings to adapt the form to the possibilities of manufacture. The tolerances are not the same when one works with stuck boards and strawberries with numerical control for PS with resistances of court or to compresses of plastic. Also we change depending on the scale of the product the differences between the Ecolupo (small toy on a large scale servant) and the Timber lupo (sticking wood for the great scale) this way they demonstrate it.

Between different averages workshops help us to continue growing with the system, investigating in the materials of a didactic way, undoubtedly the process is the protagonist in this history.

Did you meet many difficulties in his putting in march?

Lupo never arises as a project of support to other didactic projects because of it it appeared as a project where the profitability was the fundamental thing nevertheless it is automanaged economically. The efforts to extract the first product were enormous in time and dedication and also in the relation with the companies that allowed us to do innumerable tests.

We realize alliances of all kinds with companies, laboratories, universities, engineerings … to continue giving steps without having to contribute excessive quantities of money. Always we had the impression that we were doing someI+D kind of research and development but the certain thing is that we never receive helps in this sense, we do not also link the investigation to a university in the strict sense of “university project of investigation” though evidently we are investigating and also we are motivating the relation investigation-company that so much has become fashionable.

We have clearly where the knowledge is and also where the machines are and that if there is no economic profitability or at least possibility of she being, we cannot bother to the companies. We do not do patents to fatten the curriculum since it is done in many universities. The aim is to create useful products, to exploit the patents. To promote this transmission of the knowledge from the centers of investigation. There where it exists knowledge and machines there is a possibility of creating a new lupo.

Are you satisfied with the reached aims?

Since lupo is an opened project the system continues in development and I do not have the sensation of having reached any aim. It is true that there are very gratifying moments that can be considered to be mini aims but the only aims to be the didactic ones that appear to the beginning of every workshop, and this not always they are reached.

The didactic equipment marks these aims from the challenges that we form in the planes, the aims are fulfilled or not and certainly not always they are tied to finishing the construction or to that this one is kept in foot once finished the session. Generally the aims are in the process from the participative processes, let’s not forget that lupo is a tool for the work in group.

Do you believe that the architects in Spain we should open new routes of work to go out of the “most “traditional” cabin of projecting given the current situation of the construction in our country?

Good it is evident, first an architect newly qualified is a top graduate, or what is the same thing is someone who has demonstrated to the administration a few capacities and aptitudes for the obtaining of a level of top education. It said this way of a pull he does not assure not even that should can do a good project but he says other things of the one who possesses it. Our formation in the Schools of Architecture is very transverse since we know and it qualifies us for many labors, but also it should serve us to interact with success with the rest of professionals. The traditional vision of the architect – builder is in crisis but many things can be constructed by the architectural logic without being the traditional constructions.

What do you think of those that they have been going to work abroad?

The profile belongs fundamentally to young highly qualified people who sees possibilities that here do not offer, before this situation I believe that nobody can accuse to the youth of being doing the correct thing when they decide to go away. Surely I end up by doing the same thing …
