“The principal aim of the ICO Museum is to spread the best contemporary, both Spanish and international architecture. This year we have travelled from Olot to Seville to offer a more wide perspective of our architecture. This way, after RCR Arquitectes, it is an honor to be able to possess now Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz.

“Sharing table with the designers”.
The singularity of the retrospective qualified exhibition “Cruz and Ortiz 1/200…1/2000” of the work of the study Cruz and Ortiz Architects might be defined clearly by this title represented in the words of the commissioner of the exhibition Jesús Ulargui Agurruza, architect and project teacher of the ETSAM from 1993.
The observation in the process of the thought proyectual emerges as the tables are crossed by the exposed material, since we meet models of two different scales; 1:200, it climbs that it invites us to bring us over, and to cross visually the interior space of a work or to 1:2000, climbs that it reveals an idea or conductive thread in the execution of a project with the synthesis as allied.

They form a part of the elongated tables where 50 projects of the study show themselves throughout more than 40 years of professional path, the sketches to lifted hand and the representative planes of each one of the projects or works. The participation of the sketches also will support and support the title with which we were initiating this brief comment.
During the press conference Mónica de Linos put special emphasis in two projects of interest for the ICO Museum:
– The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, for the exercise of reflection of what a museum must be.
– Atlético de Madrid Stadium, for the intervention of the study in the urban development history of Madrid.
On the other hand, Jesus Ulargui Agurruza explained to us 4 fundamental tools that we will verify along the exhibition;
1. The transformation of the room in the only unit crossed by tables, illuminated and prepared to expose the pieces of identical way.
2. Methodology of work based on sketch and models, which intention is to share table with the designers. The models in two only scales 1:200 / 1:2000 to go on from the small thing to the big thing in the only exercise of synthesis.
3. 16 videoes in a visit guided by the buildings at the expense of the own architects.
4. A catalogue of character closed with 12 works of the study that also form a part of the 50 that show themselves in the exhibition.
The qualified catalogue “Cruz and Ortiz 12 buildings / 12 texts”, agrees according to Antonio Cruz’s words:
“The only body of thought that arises from the selection of 12 representative buildings and his respective comments derived from the opinion of 12 architects selected specially by the study to comment each of the projects.”
Ado preambles we share the small chat that we had the opportunity to realize both architects in the ICO Museum in Madrid.
Why to introduce the topic of the scale in the explanatory approach?
Antonio Ortiz: The architects we know well this traffic that takes place by means of the use of progressively major scales. In him it splits of a beginning often intuitively up to reaching the precision and accuracy that a technical document demands.
The museum has divided in three explanatory spaces and two projection zones. For what this exposition?
Antonio Ortiz: We are not fitted by doubt of the fascination that the reproductions to scale of the reality produce in whom they contemplate them. Something of it is tried to reach across the profusion of exposed models and to underline from the same title of the exhibition. It has been wanted like that to find a solution for something with what all the architects we coincide: an exhibition of architecture is not anything easy of doing.
After more three decades of professional exercise what is spectator going to be in this new exhibition?
Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos: Already for years we realize a few first exhibitions – we are called them a “Syntheses Architecture” – in which we use also the models to illustrate what we have just explained. The present exhibition would be, therefore, an intensification of the previous ones. And his title – more aseptic and less pretentious, 1/200 … 1/2000-it is the recognition of the undeniable capacity of suggestion of the limited thing.
Distributed and placed placed in strategic places in the exhibition we are Jose Manuel Ballester’s photographies, National Prize of Photography 2010, which magnitude and beauty give to the same one.
Antonio Ortiz: Jose Manuel Ballester’s collaboration, with five of his photographies it is necessary to understand it as a gesture of generosity and make friends for your part on having accepted a subsidiary paper that is not habitual in him. These photos in big formats accentuate without illustrating certain moments of the exhibition.
In his chats or conferences they affirm that the ” building must explain from yes same “. But how and when does project originate? Is it an individual or collective moment? How does it develop later to come to this concept?
Antonio Cruz: The project of architecture originates from a conversation, of the dialog with my partner, of the meticulous analysis of the components, does not arise as brilliant idea in an instant, but from the study and the understanding.
Which is a conductive thread that all his works sew?
Antonio Cruz: I do not know it well, sometimes one thinks that the critics must answer these questions not the own authors of the works, I think that there is a conductive thread that is the response to the needs of every problem that we receive. The conductive thread would be precisely I do not spin driver. That is to say, to think that every problem or order that comes to the study is a new or different problem, and that it is necessary to analyze which is the opportunity that one hides behind this order. To discover the opportunity that offers the order is very important, and the analysis of the situation might be the conductive thread, for example we can work with the materials, with the structure, can work with the function, be discovering this it would be the conductive thread that sews all the works.
Often it is said that the problem hides the solution.
Antonio Cruz: Exactly, to try to do of the problems, virtues.
This crisis has revealed that other models of architects exist, given his extensive professional and educational experience, what tour does he think that they have? Should educational model adapt to the new needs?
Antonio Cruz: The educational model must adapt in effect, do not be what comment it might do on this question … evidently the type of teaching that exists in Spain is different enough from the one that we find in other countries, is a very technical teaching, where the architect receives a great technical formation, and this has his advantage and his disadvantages, the Spanish architect dominates the technology or at least it has knowledge of this technology, but on the other hand also it is true that often the architects go out with a low plastic formation or a low formation in the problems of the form and are more trained in the technical problems that in the formal ones, and this surely in Spain would have to improve.
What would they advise the current students and future professionals of architecture?
Antonio Cruz: That have calmness, which they have great calm, that flee of the rapid and easy ways, which realize that this one is an activity that demands very much knowledge, great calm and great appraisal of the different problems which they are going to face and which do not have hurry.
