The architect and the power. Albert Speer | Jorge Gorostiza

Today in Spain it is a day called of reflection because tomorrow the citizens iremos to voting. A historical day because the people have begun to the street to protest for a system that only it allows the massive participation by means of the vote, has not worked (or even it has provoked) this crisis and it has armoured his members. I cannot avoid my enthusiasm before this civil movement that he me remembers going out to the street to demonstrate in the stertors of that dark time that they have named a Franco’s regime; it is true that at the time it was more dangerous, but not less exciting than now. I don´t know what will happen (nobody knows it) but for fewer Spanish have moved and it fills me with hope. A movement, certainly, “constant “interpreted” by the images in movement, so much for his own channels in the social networks, since for the officials.

We know all those who are these politicians whom another profession does not know, this that are not going to change, they are going to question his way of life, in people that I confess I am not interested; but in the lists together with them there are technical personnel and honest professionals that, since I am optimistic, I suppose that they want to improve his company and not just to leave the lists of the unemployment. Yes I interest and worry these, and immediately I could not have stopped agreeing me of Albert Speer, that architect, looked like to Faust, seduced by the devil hitleriano and, since this one is a blog of architecture and cinema, that he has been the architect that more times it has appeared in movies of fiction, but of it I believe that I will speak inside some week. It does little I obtained an old book written by qualified Joachim Fest Preguntas sin respuesta: Conversaciones con Albert Speer (Target Editions, Barcelona, 2008), Fest had helped Speer in the draft of his interesting Memories and had been taking notes of every aquéllo that Speer did not write, and it is what it publishes in these conversations, which Introduction finishes with these Fest’s words:

«Beyond the royal scope of his knowledge, always it has seemed to me to be worrying that a man of his social and familiar origin, and provided with the moral own criteria of his education, was capable of feeling attracted by a power up to such a cruel and proud point of his atrocities. His often zaherientes samples of scorn towards the leaders of the regime with whom he was hobnobbing, far from arranging nothing, increase furthermore the irritation that provokes the spectator».

«Precisely this circumstance raises the question of all the questions, a question that constitutes the legacy of the numerous tyrants of our epoch and that still is devoid of a response at least approximate: what precautions is it necessary to take to construct a species of insurance opposite to similar loss of all the criteria?.. And, which probably is furthermore desasosegante do such precautions exist?».
