Some of Fabulatorio’s last works

Fabulatorio is a publishing project promoted by Cibrán Rico López and Suso Vázquez Gómez, architects of formation dedicated professionally to the graphical design and publishing design under the name of desescribir.

Which has been your formation and professional path before Fabulatorio?

For us it is difficult to separate the professional world of the personnel, we like to think about the formation as a fact that comes out the academic thing, about something more vital; of fact the more valuable thing that we take to ourselves of the years in the ETSA of To Corunna is the people that we have known, to have been.

That during the career, one of our friends needed a cartel for a contest of traditional music, it was the professional beginning of desescribir; from there, they are nine years of formation and of dedication to the trade of graphical and publishing designers.

Did you appear in some moment, present, past or future, to look for work abroad?

In moments of certain precariousness we met obliged to value it, but our desire is to be employed at Galicia. We feel the need and simultaneously the responsibility of developing our work in and from our culture. We are sure that the value of the global thing resides in the local thing, and want to establish a global communication conscious that the local thing is what differs and grants genuineness to him to this communication.

Looking at the past, we like to understand ” our place ” as continuity of the work, effort and aims of the professionals who developed the same trade in Galicia before that we; looking at the present, we feel part of a “ecosystem” where the work and good to play the role of professionals of all the disciplines always reverberates in ours improves; we all are employed at community, let’s be or not conscious of it.

What did you lead to starting this project?

As publishing house, first, the love for the books. We think that the books preserve the aptitude to report across his content and his form; that support the aptitude to turn into vital experience, of proposing other times and of making ourselves grow. Somehow we believe that the ideal one illustrated of the books continues being in force, that they represent one of the more accessible and effective forms of resistance opposite to the process of mercantilización of all the facets of the life that we are suffering as company. In the bottom, probably only it is a question of learning, to discovering and to being left to surprising.

When more we enjoy our work it is when we give form to contents in that we are interested, so, after years designing, we appear the possibility of starting a project as publishers, looking and proposing we themselves the topics. We wanted to enjoy and to take part of the whole process of production of a publication.

Did you meet many difficulties in his putting in march?

Basically economic and also someone to administer the times and to make compatible it with our designers’ professional activity, which is the one that allows us to live. The rest of difficulties we think that they are the normal ones of any project that starts: to seek for answers to what it is not known and to learn of those that yes they know.

Anyhow, beyond the difficulties, which already we were possessing, we prefer centring ourselves and to give him more importance to the facilities: those that us there have contributed all the persons with whom we have collaborated to start the project, or simply, that of any person who has decided to acquire a book. We are very conscious that besides the possible particular interest in a publication, many people of whom he bought a copy did also for helping to that Fabulatorio could have a continuity. This perspective of proximity and of community makes us very happy. Definitively we have many more reasons for the gratefulnesses that for the lamentations.

Are you satisfied with the reached aims?

At the moment we think that still it is prompt to speak about reached aims. It is a question rather of being fulfilling stages or of of being having small satisfactions, as for example of doing that Fabulatorio is a reality with independence and on the basis of our intentions and convictions, of being able to put in touch with many people of that to learn, to verify that the work is perceived what exists behind every publication, to enjoy the process, or to exhaust the issue of the first two books in only one year.

Everything what is arising about the publishing house motivates and deceives us. In this sense, from the professional and emotional point of view, we feel satisfied.

If we analyze the economic sustainability of the project it is true that still fails us to give some steps to be able to reach her, but we have very clear that we are not interested in the short period and the immediate profitabilities. We believe that any initiative, and more if it fits a publishing house, needs a time to be consolidated.

Do you believe that the architects in Spain we should continue opening new routes of work to go out of the “most “traditional” cabin of projecting given the current situation of the construction in our country?

We believe that the architects are a professional indispensable group, but it is necessary to recover the confidence of the company taking again the function of public service. It turns out evident that the worries of a part of the profession moved away too much of the interests and needs that the citizenship was claiming.

From out, on not having been practising, we observe all these debates on the new routes of work for the architects with a certain amazement: the architecture and the urbanism, and professionals who practise in a responsible way and with knowledge they continue being totally necessary. Another thing is that to be an architect obliged visar is considered to be a certain number of projects a year. We know many companions of the school who scarcely have had the opportunity to construct and that nevertheless more architects are great that different that there is visa hundreds or thousands of housings, or public equipments, without any scruple or without any reflection on his activity.

In this sense, it seems to us that the debate can manage to be a bit artificial, and that though it could turn out to be entertaining was stopping to finding a new name for the new ways of practising, in the bottom, what is done is to recover the real sense of the architect’s profession, preparing itself to realize his labor in a context and for a company that is not the same of 30 years ago, but that will continue needing housings in which to live and cities in which to coexist.

Another different aspect is the lack of work as architect, and of worthy work, in the current moment, and the possibility of being reorientated professionally, something that, on the other hand, has been very habitual of always between architects, and not only now as consequence of the crisis.

From our own experience it looks like to us a good possibility, with the exception of which we see her more as the result of the personal vocation of each one, or of the need to find an economic and vital stability, that as the consequence of the phrase: “the architects can devote to many things”, so often promoted from the school and in many professional forums, which beside not being true, it ensues from haughty very slightly advisable one after so much excess of the profession in his set.

The specific of the formation of architect, and of some other studies, is the domain of the tool of the project, which in the bottom is not any more that to train and to acquire the aptitude to think globally. This knowledge learned undoubtedly facilitates a possible professional reorientation, but in no case it allows an automatic movement a new field of activity without a phase of specific formation, already be formal or of character self-taught.

What do you think of those that they have been going to work abroad?

We believe that all the persons should have the right to try to look for his place in the world, and because of it only we can respect the decision of those who want to find it abroad. When this decision is the consequence of a personal option it does not seem to us not likely not badly, but only a way of exercising the freedom that we have as individuals.

The problem is when this decision is not the result of a personal option, but the only route of possible leak to a situation of precariousness and of disability to be realized as professional and as person. Whenever someone leaves for this motive we all make ourselves a bit poorer, in the most wide sense of the word. Because of it, quite this process of forced emigration the only thing that generates us is a crossed sensation of loss, of defeat and of indignation.
