The project is in Nervión’s neighborhood in Seville that, as is observed in the different photographies of epoch and in the ancient mapping, always it has had a strong industrial character.
It was for many years the area of supply of the city, with multitude of agricultural plots in which wheat was cultivated especially. Already in 1830 part of the building existed object of intervention, constructed as ship of equipment and used later as store of tractors.
At the beginning of the 20th century one starts developing the industrial activity in the zone and factories begin to arise as that of beer ‘Cruz del campo’. Later the building changes use to turn into a factory of paintings, being still exempt. In the 50s one bets for the creation of housings in this one area, buildings being constructed on both sides of the same one and one plants more on part of the factory of paintings.
Recovery + Occupation.
The first phase of the project consists of the recovery of the original elements of the building: props of brick, walls of load of brick, metallic props, metallic girders, cercha metallurgy, forged unidirectional of concrete and forged with vaults of brick, in order to make legible the history and transformations of the place, and to another scale, of the neighborhood.
For it the false ceiling was eliminated under the cercha, allowing again the step of natural light, as well as the successive caps of carton – plaster, mortars, paintings, mirrors, tiling and appeased. The elements extracted to the light were treated by protective colorless treatments and antipowder.
In the second phase, consisting of the putting in use of the place for his utilization as shop, the furniture got, like the mobile trays that existed in the industry of the zone, and the semicylinders exhibitors, evoking those of Cruzcampo’s factory, to another side of the street, which they were moved to the suburbs years behind.
The agricultural ship had suffered multiple transformations during his existence, all pawned in adding new elements to the already existing ones, giving like proved overlapping cap that they were deforming the space, dividing it and confining it.
The project tries to recover the industrial original space across a process that is realized of natural form, eliminating any incidental superposed element and leaving to the overdraft the factory of brick and the metallic structure that they gave form to the ship of beginning of last century. Later this space will be busy with mobile elements and provisional furniture.
The door of agricultural machinery.
As part of the recovery of the original front of walls of brick of the ship, there was discovered a hollow that worked in the past as access of tractors.
In the front can be observed diverse fingerprints of the interventions that it has suffered throughout the time, as metallic lintels and different solutions in brick.
Said original front, as his changes and blemishes, is recovered in an exercise of memory.
Once recovered the ship deals with a new activity. A shop of comics that possesses a series of permanent products and temporary others, treats itself about a nearest space to museístico that to a conventional shop.
Displacing imaginary so nearby of Cruzcampo’s factory and the placement of his tanks, we think opportunely to associate the exhibition of the permanent product with a series of glass tanks arranged in diverse positions like showcases that intergesticulate, across reflections and transparency, with the light, the product and the movement of the people on having crossed the space.
The product that is exposed of more temporary form, provided that it is changing approximately every month according to innovations and seasons, is exposed following an industrial logic of trays and mobile surfaces.
Not so at least the exhibition of books, in racks, is fixed. It is a question of mobile furniture that they can close and transport to different positions depending on the caprice of the owner of the shop, which does that depending on the moment of the year in which we visit her us one will present with a different configuration.
There is claimed that the whole operation of occupation of the space recovered with the new use is easily reversible, on having eliminated the shop of comics there will stay an agricultural left ship.
The wakefull construction.
The constructive predominant systems are always ceramic, being possible to read the different epochs in the type of used factory, so much in case of the brick as the secondhand mortar (of lime or of cement), the color and the condition of the same one. The resultant catalogue of solutions is of great interest, working as example of local manners of constructing in every stage and linked to every activity: the agriculturalist, the industrial and the residential one, showing the different transformations, not only of the building but of the own neighborhood.
Singular events like the floods of the year 1961 that punished this zone specially, also are visible in the place, across the socle of recovered mortar, which level coincides with the one that is observed in the photos of the flood, taken in the same street.
The contribution of the project as for the material is not so much what is added, if not in what recovers.
